BUDDY, J.J. AND Mac sat on a row of crates just inside the huge hangar door. They sipped cold beers, served in longneck bottles, as they stared out into the midafternoon sunshine.
“Where are you headed next?” Buddy asked.
Mac took a long sip of his beer. “I haven’t decided. I thought I’d stick around here for another week while I line up some jobs.”
“You’re welcome to stay,” Buddy said. “You’ve done a good job with the crop dusting. And it’s going to be a while before I can fly a plane myself. Got to stop taking the pain medication first.”
“How are you feeling?” Mac asked.
“Old,” Buddy said. “Way too old.” He shook his head. “Where did all the years go?”
“You have regrets?” Mac asked.
“Sure, I got plenty,” Buddy said. “I never settled down, found myself a wife. I always figured I’d have time for all that. Then suddenly I didn’t. I would have liked to have kids. Maybe done a bit more traveling. Now I got these bum hips, I can’t barely make it from one side of the hangar to the other. You boys take some advice from me. It’s no treat to be alone. Find yourselves a nice woman.”
J.J. leaned forward and fixed his gaze on something outside the hangar. “Speaking of women, is that Emma Bryant tearing up the road there?”
Mac squinted against the sunlight, surprised when he recognized the battered Volvo. “Yep, that’s her. I wonder what she’s coming out here for.”
“I thought it was over between you two,” J.J. said.
“I told you that was only temporary,” Mac said, pushing to his feet.
He’d definitely missed her. His nights hadn’t been the same, sleeping on the lumpy cot at the hangar, no soft, sweet body to touch, no smiles when he woke up in the morning. He was still as determined to explore what was between him and Emma as he’d been in that field after his near-accident. He just hadn’t figured out how to put it to her.
But, hell, Buddy was right. If he wanted that for the rest of his years, a woman in his bed and in his life, then he’d damn well have to do something about it.
Emma pulled the car up in front of the hangar door and got out. J.J. and Buddy watched her, and Mac heard Buddy say to J.J., “If I were thirty years younger, there’s the girl I’d take a chance on. She’s pretty, she’s smart and she can bake a helluva cake.”
Mac walked up to the driver’s-side window of her car and leaned in. “Hi. What are you doing out this way?”
“We need to talk,” Emma said. “Do you have some time?”
“Sure,” he said. “You want to stay here or go somewhere else?”
“Get in,” she said.
Mac circled the car and slipped into the passenger seat. Emma made a wide U-turn and headed back down the road. “We’ll get ice cream,” she said, glancing his way. “Everything goes better with ice cream. Have you been to the Dairy Bar?”
Mac shook his head.
