Chapter Seven:
Lunch
Caution flew out the window as more arrows rained down around them. Parker scrambled past the Death Sphere, and Nolan followed. He tripped halfway around and fell sideways, rolling into the wall to distance himself from the deadly orb. Another arrow struck the foliage inches above his head. Nolan found his feet again and took off after Parker. More switch points lined the path, but they continued to weave around them. Thick moss and tangled branches slowed their progress, but so far theyâd stayed ahead of the projectiles firing from above.
âCan you see whatâs shooting at us?â Nolan asked in between heavy breaths as they ran.
âOh, geez. Yeah, just give me a second. Iâll just pull up. Stand in the middle of the path. Puff out my chest nice and big. Slowly grab this set of binoculars Iâve kept hidden from you, and thenâNo, I havenât seen whatâs shooting at us! Iâve been running for my life!â
âOkay, Mr. Grouchy Pants. I wonât ask any more questions. Just focus on the running.â
âI am,â Parker huffed.
They skidded to a stop at a T-intersection. To the right, the passage was blocked by another Death Sphere. To the left, normal switch points were stacked three high next to each other, forming a rather intimidating wall. Parker trotted in that direction, but Nolan couldnât take his eyes off the second Death Sphere.
âCome on, Erling. We can scale the vines against the wall and get over these. The path looks clear on the other side.â
Nolanâs feet didnât move, though. Why was there more than one Death Sphere in the maze? Parker yelled at him again, jolting him away from the thought.
Then he realized something else. âThe arrows stopped, Parker.â
âGood.â
âDonât you think thatâs a little strange?â
âMaybe they ran out.â Parker was halfway up the wall. âAbout time our luck changed. Come on. Letâs move!â
âWait!â Nolan yelled back. âI donât think we should go that way.â
âLook. You told me to avoid those Death Spheres. Now Iâm avoiding those Death Spheres. You should be proud of me.â
Nolan snorted. âYeah, that will never happen.â
He took a handful of cautious steps down the other path, toward the Death Sphere. Heâd only traveled a few feet before another arrow sank into the ground in front of him. He followed the source of the shot to find a small man in blue shorts crouching among the foliage lining the top of the wall fifty feet ahead of him. The tiny figure tried to duck down and hide, but he wore an enormous headdress of bone about three times his size that made him easy to spot. Nolan took another two steps forward, and the man pulled his bow back. He let go as the headdress toppled him over backward. The errant shot flew well over Nolanâs head.
âOne of two things is happening. Either our friends are horrible shots,â Nolan said, creeping ahead. The figure found his feet and raised his weapon again. Nolan quickly backpedaled, causing the man to lower his bow. âOr they are herding us in a particular direction.
