Chapter Ten

The next three days passed quickly, far too quickly for Lydia’s liking, as she got ready for her show. First, she had to solve the problem of extending her act for another half an hour. She sat, listed her past repertoire of tricks and picked the best ones. Then she called Troy and got him to courier out the necessary props, which—thank God—came in under twenty-four hours. She practiced the tricks over and over until they felt like second nature and blended seamlessly with the rest of the performance.

Next, it was time for the tech and dress rehearsals. While these were happening, she was also taking taxis around town to give radio and TV interviews.

“My show is called Beyond Belief,” she would tell presenters. “You’re going to love it. Some of the tricks are so good that I often don’t believe I’m actually doing them myself.”

Then she would give a breathy laugh.

Then the presenter would laugh too.

Then she would offer two lucky viewers or listeners the once-in-a-lifetime chance to win a pair of tickets to the show.

She always pretended that she was having fun when really she was so sick with nerves that she could hardly eat. At night, she would lie in bed and picture props getting stuck, imagine forgetting her lines and hearing the audience’s stony silence. Once, twice, three times, she thought about going to a walk-in clinic to ask for some sleeping tablets, but she never did because she was scared of becoming addicted to them. There was so much pressure to succeed.

Sometimes, during the day, Jedd would be with her helping her and sometimes he wouldn’t be. There was still a lot that she didn’t know about him. She’d tried searching for his new residency show on the Internet but hadn’t found any information, and when she’d asked him about it, he’d brushed her aside with a, “Darling, enough about me. Let’s focus on you.”

He wore the same suit most of the time. Judging from his bloodshot eyes, he’d often been up all night. But as the days marched on, she found herself thinking less and less about him and spending more and more time fretting about her show.

All too soon, it was the night before the opening gala performance. At eleven p.m., she put on her pajamas and climbed into bed. Her mind was going overtime, moving from the ESP mind reading trick to the aces in a wine glass trick then back again. She sighed. There was no way that she’d ever get to sleep.

She got up, pulled on her clothes, padded out into the corridor and paused by Conner’s room. She hadn’t seen him all day, although they’d been texting a lot—well, sexting, actually. There’d been tons of eggplant and peach emojis flying about.

Now she peered under the gap beneath his door. It was dark and the room was silent. He was probably asleep. It would be selfish to disturb him, especially as he’d been up to his neck all day with meetings.
