Reverend Abraham slipped the blade’s fine edge along the side of a sharpening block. It had been a number of years since he had last used his tools and he had been waiting for the opportunity. It had been part of the reason he had taken this dead end posting in a half empty parish in the middle of nowhere. He had whiled away many evenings at the seminary looking for incidents that might have suggested activity from the undead. Local papers from across the country had strewn the floor of his modest apartment as he read stories of alien sightings, unexplained disappearances and peculiar deaths. His mind thought in patterns and he scoured the regional rags in desperation, looking for the perfect assembly. It had taken a year but ultimately he had found it in Little Whippendon. A place so small and seemingly so inconsequential that it appeared particularly unrealistic that it could be home to anything as fantastical as vampires but there was method in Abraham’s perceived madness.

For a start, there were the ramblers. Over the past twenty years over twenty individuals had been holidaying in the area, taking in the beauty of the countryside, only to disappear. Their families were distraught of course, and searches were raised but not a soul was ever found. More interestingly perhaps, was the complete lack of information regarding the cases. In the papers, all of them were mentioned as a by line and all contained the phrase “no witnesses were found”.

It seemed very odd to the Reverend that in all these cases, in such tight knit communities, no trace of a witness or information about the incidents was ever reported. In addition to this peculiarity was the location of the incidents. The ramblers had all started their walks at different locations in the county, with plans of journeying to many different destinations. None had reached their goals and after some uncomfortable interviews with the families and quite a lot of guesswork on a map, Abraham had managed to find a point where all of the planned walks had intersected. Little Whippendon.

He had decided on a visit to the area as soon as he had the level of analysis to back up his claims but his plans were accelerated by a particularly unusual article that followed some weeks later. The Vicar of the village had gone mad. At least, he seemed to have gone mad. The paper reported that he had killed a man and kidnapped his family while his defence was wholly unbelievable. A zombie had attacked him. A zombie of which there was no trace more to the point. Not only did this suggest to our heroic vampire hunter that there might be more to the occult side of Little Whippendon than he imagined; it also meant there was a job going. The bishop had been more than happy to post Abraham to the village. It was a load off his mind. The lad was a pretty diligent student but ultimately got too carried away with his own ideas.
