Chapter 18
Gav stood facing me from the opposite side of a wide-open room with metal riveted walls and a tiled floor. The room was devoid of furniture. Light shone from somewhere, though I couldnât see any windows on the walls or any visible lights in the space. I could see no door, leaving me to believe it must be behind me.
âMolly!â Gav shouted my name again and again.
I tried to run, or even walk, toward him, but my feet wouldnât move an inch. Gav made no visible effort to approach me, though it was possible he was as rooted in place as I was.
A shadowed figure shrouded in dark robes and a large dark hood pulled over its head appeared behind Gav. He didnât seem to notice and continued to yell my name. I opened my mouth to warn him, but no sound escaped my lips. The figure made a steady approach, not appearing to notice me, until it swooped in and swallowed Gav up. It then vanished as fast as it had appeared, taking Gav with it. All that remained was a black void where they had been moments before.
I woke up with the scream that finally escaped my lips. My throat felt raw, and I had somehow managed to cocoon myself in my blankets.
In a flash, Henry jumped down from the top bunk and stood leaning over me, his eyes panicked and his hands touching my shoulders. Soft dusk light shone through the window across the room, framing his hair and softening the edges. He looked like he was made of gold and the effect made my heart flutter. âMolly?! What happened?â he asked. âAre you hurt?â
I struggled my way out of the blanket cocoon enough to sit up, brushing his hands off in the process. âSorry,â I croaked. âIt was just a bad dream. I didnât mean to wake you up.â
His features relaxed. âItâs okay, he said, walking a step back. âWe should probably be awake by now anyway.â
âHow long did we sleep?â I asked around a yawn as I rubbed the sleep from my eyes.
He moved his shoulders up and down. âLong enough.â
I flung the blankets off and climbed out of bed. After smoothing my clothes and hair with my hands, I followed Henry into the main room of our living quarters. âWe need a plan,â I blurted.
He turned from where he stood and studied me, his brows furrowed.
I cleared my throat. âI mean,â I said. âWhat are we going to do now that weâre here?â
âI donât know,â he said. âThis was never my plan.â
I crossed my arms and glared at him. âIt wasnât mine either.â
Henry raised his hands in surrender. âI didnât mean it like that, Molly.â
For a moment I thought that was all he would say, but, as the silence hung over us, he spoke again. âWeâre both here because of Gav,â he said, his voice quiet and forced now, like he didnât want to say the words. âBoth of our lives changed forever because of him.
