CHAPTER VI
Every night, Magec would make the same walk with Eve to the lake, showing her all the new things they found, and every night he would work on the two stones while telling Eve stories, real or not, to entertain her as she sat strangely still until it was time to go. Dew would sit with them sometimes, also listening to the stories Magec told so well. He was an amazing storyteller.
The stones started to take shape after a few nights and were finished within a week. He had been carving two beautiful chairs that would overlook the place where his father had been laid to rest. The back of the chairs represented the waterfall they knew so well and the seat was the flowing river where Odegus had come to life, the silver river that once gave him his name. The arms of the chairs were twisted branches of the trees with trunks forming the legs. These represented the trees that held the body of his father when Eve was created.
When he stepped back, he looked at his finished work and was pleased. His hands ached and hurt but his soul was at peace, for he had finished what heâd set his heart on doing. The chairs would stand the passing of time and the community would remember Odegus as the Guide who assisted a civilisation of free thinkers, their thoughts flowing free like the river. His mother, Larkha, would be able to sit there and feel closer to the man who sheâd loved so much. He would do the same, every night, and would bring Eve to sit with him and talk about all the things of the world.
Magec then called for his mother to come over to show her what he had done. When she arrived, she was impressed. The chairs had been carved beautifully and lovingly.
Magec told Larkha that this was also a present for her. He couldnât undo what he had done, but he could bring Odegus closer to her. He suggested that they could sit together and she could share stories of her life before them, and of her life after finding them. Maybe stories of when he was a little boy. He felt that he did not know anything about his own mother, that he had been quite selfish, and he did not want his daughter to grow up the same way. A small tear slid down Larkha's ageing face and Magec hugged her. The love she had craved so much since Magec had started his search for knowledge had finally come back to her. She felt bliss.
Larkha sat down on the stone chair and looked at the centre of the lake, her black eyes fixated on its quiet waters, her mind perhaps recreating scenes of happier memories long gone.
Magec and Eve walked towards the river where Magec joined some of the others getting washed. They joked and laughed because he always found the water to be colder than anybody else. Eve sat patiently on the edge of the river and put her feet in the water.
