I’ve been in Heaven for almost a day, and the crash back to Earth hurts.

Jake’s doing his best to soften the blow. He’s got both his hands folded around mine, cradling them while he gently tells me the facts. But each one hits me hard ... and I get the feeling that he’s holding back some of what he knows.

“The boss wants you to shut off your phone completely when not in use or at least mute the microphone and cover the cameras. There’s evidence that Marvin was tracking you using your phone.”

Numb, I nod and reach into my jacket pocket—then sigh with relief. The battery’s dead—it’s probably been dead for hours. I keep it turned off as I charge it. “It’s been off for a while now. Don’t know how long. I didn’t check it.”

He doesn’t look too relieved. “Well, that was how he was tracking you. Do you have any idea where this bastard is living?”

“No, he um ... he got thrown out by his mom after I told her what he was doing to me. He’s got money, though. But no connections to anyone that I know of.” It makes me sick to think about it.

Every time Marvin faces consequences for harassing me, he comes back twice as hard. It’s like he plans to force me to love him and thinks that will somehow actually work.

But Jake won’t let that happen, and neither will I. “Okay, got it about the phone. But what’s this about an FBI agent? That was a lot to take in.”

“Her name’s Carolyn Moss. The boss called her an ‘asset,’ so I’m guessing she works with him a lot. We have to work together to find a way to draw Marvin out so she can make the collar. He’s got a lot more than just stalking and attacking you to answer for, apparently.” He can’t make eye contact suddenly.

What did Marvin do? “Like what?”

“Well, I don’t know much, but it’s enough to make him interesting to the FBI, especially after he tried to use both the cops and the feds to raid the arena. That was pretty much the dumbest thing he could have done, given that the cops are already looking for him,” he says. “So ... yeah. Your stalker is gonna go away for a very long time if we can just draw him out.” He rubs his big palm over the back of my hand, and my belly tightens with desire despite the stress.

Can’t we just climb back into bed to make love again and forget about all of this?

But his serious expression already tells me otherwise. I brace myself and nod, tears in my eyes. “There’s a lot more you’re not telling me, isn’t there? Stuff I missed while I was ... asleep.”

The sweetest, deepest sleep of my life—absolutely peaceful. And before and after, sex and tenderness, and falling deeper in love every minute that I spent in his arms. I want that back ... but Marvin is trying to ruin it all for good.
