Their laughter died down and Elizabeth took a drink. She didn’t want to start coughing. The rest of the restaurant continued as if they weren’t there. The world cared not about two women making a connection despite the beliefs of romance writers. Birds didn’t sing and there were no fireworks. Both women calmed down and continued their conversation.

“I feel a lot better,” Elizabeth said. “You have a wonderful laugh, but it almost sounds unused.”

“Thanks, I think. I don’t find a lot of things to laugh about,” Autumn said unsure how to take that. “So, what is mole sauce?”

“Oh, well, I’m not entirely sure what’s in it, but I know it usually has a smoky chocolaty taste. I like it. It adds a little heat and a lot of flavor when made correctly.”

“Chocolate on pork?” Autumn wrinkled her nose. “That sounds… weird.”

“Sure, but it’s good. I take it you don’t try a lot of new things?”

“I’ve never really cared much about food, really. I watch my diet for the sake of nutrition. I’ve spent time eating carefully and such, but food has never been all that important to me. It’s simply something I need to live.”

“Really?” Elizabeth looked sad for a moment. “That’s terrible. I understand watching what you eat and all, but food can be so awesome. I’ve taken trips with the hope of eating the native food somewhere. I went to a convention in Seattle once and had to go to Pike Place Fish Market. It was awesome. I then had to go eat seafood at some of the local places. It was really good.”

“I’d like to visit Seattle,” Autumn said with a smile.

“Really? Did I convince you already? Because there are better food cities than that. New Orleans is amazing.”

“No, I’d like to go and watch a Seahawks game there,” Autumn told her. “That is, actually, my favorite team in the NFL.”

“Well, what do you know? You finally tell me a favorite of yours and I know nothing about them. I guess I may have known that Seattle had a football team. I assume that the guys you date all know that stuff,” Elizabeth took a drink and felt a little stupid. She had hoped to find more for them to bond on.

“It’s okay,” Autumn told her. “I am usually on my own in my interest. I don’t expect you to know them all that well. In fact, when I have been with men, sports are usually all we have. Most of them are usually pretty dismissive of my interest as well.”

“Really? Why? I always thought guys wanted to date a chick who liked sports.”

“Well, the meat-heads I’ve been with have wanted to date women who were interested, but they wanted to know more about it. There’s a macho aspect to it all.”

“Yeah?” Elizabeth was a bit scared. Knowing she was the first, she was worried about how she might measure up. She knew she wasn’t anything like the guys Autumn had been with before. They were probably all jocks who lifted and did tough things like watch combat sports with her.
