Chapter Eleven

“It’s time.”

Daniel paused in front of the mirror, one hand holding his razor against his cheek, the other clutching the phone in a death grip as he waited for Cade to say more. So far everything had gone according to plan. Cade had secured Gabby a job as a substitute teacher in the small town where he lived in Montana, and Daniel had sent her on her way.

He’d second-guessed not telling her about their plan a thousand times, but caution had eventually won the battle against his guilt. He let her go with the belief that she was finally on her own. It was best she think it was over, and go about starting her new life as if it were.

As innocent as Gabby was, she was incapable of subterfuge, and if she knew about their plan to lure Lucien to Montana, using her as bait, she’d fall apart the second Lucien’s thugs arrived to verify her identity; she’d blow the whole op. Hell, he’d been a walking wreck himself since the moment she’d left their roadside motel room in Pittsburgh, where he’d stayed behind to wait for word from Cade.

The second Cade confirmed that Gabby’s location had been successfully leaked to Lucien, Daniel’d caught the first flight to Billings and checked into a small Bed and Breakfast in the town just south of where Cade lived, where he’d been waiting for Cade to confirm that Lucien was on his way.

“Is he there?” Daniel asked in the wake of Cade’s silence.

“One of his aliases popped up on a flight to Billings. He’ll be here the day after tomorrow. I don’t know how long it will take him to locate her, but we shouldn’t take any chances.”

“I’ll be there in an hour,” he said as he wiped the stray traces of shaving cream from his face. “I’ll tell Grant to meet us at your place so we can go over the plan.”

“Grant is a piece of work by the way,” Cade said with a chuckle. “That part of the plan worked seamlessly. He’s pulled the wool over my nephews’ eyes with his ‘handyman’ act.”

“Is Gabby staying there, too?” At the mention of Cade’s nephews, he began to second guess their plan. In the short time Gabby had been in Grassland, Cade’s nephews, Grey, Matt, and Mason had begun dating her. All three of them. He didn’t know how to feel about the idea of three men and a single woman in a relationship together. How serious could it be?

“Yes,” Cade answered, “and she doesn’t suspect a thing as far as I can tell. You were right about her. She’s as skittish as a newborn colt. My nephews have taken her in, but they got a little suspicious when I started asking questions about her, so I’ve kept my distance.”

“Is she going to be okay?” Daniel asked. “I mean, I don’t want to see her get hurt. Three brothers after the same woman…I can’t see that working out too well in the end.
