AS SANDY ENTERED THE Gingerbread House diner, she saw Suzie Keit with her back to the door leaning her elbows against the edge of the counter. The waitress was stretching her long tanned leg in the air, her white sneaker pointed at the ceiling, as she examined the limb. Her scant uniform showed off her lean physique, a brown pleated mini-skirt, paired with a sleeveless button-up that had a little running gingerbread sewn above the chest.

Sandy slipped unnoticed into a booth. The lunchtime rush was over, and she had the restaurant to herself. She studied the menu and didn’t hear Suzie coming until she put a glass of water on the table. “Afternoon, Sandy. I bet you’re busy with this awful murder. I keep telling Pop to lock his doors at night, but you know how the older generation is. Imagine a murderer right here in Kasselville? I can hardly sleep with worry, especially with this little one on the way.” Suzie rubbed her hand over her emerging baby bump. “If he’s not on my bladder he’s heating me like a furnace. I said to Buster, Honey, this is absolutely the last kiddo. Of course, he insists on having a football team.”

“Right,” Sandy smiled. “Congratulations.”

Suzie clicked her ballpoint pen. “Listen to me going on. What can I get you?”

Sandy didn’t need to look at the menu. “I’ll take the onion rings. The veggie burger and curly fries. A strawberry shake. A slice of mud pie with whipped cream. And a black coffee with the pie.”

“Jeez Sandy, are you ordering lunch or just reading out the menu?” Suzie held her bump as she chuckled. “Just kidding. I’ll give that to Earl straight away. There’s no order ahead of you, it’ll be out in no time at all.” Suzie tore off the order from her pad and placed it on the table.

Thirty minutes later Sandy had eaten most of her lunch when the bell on the inside of the door tinkled and Rey appeared. Her face was flushed, and she looked excited until Suzie caught her eye and waved. Rey wriggled into the booth beside Sandy and held the menu up to her face. “Ugh. Of course, she’s here.”

“What kept you, Rey? Sorry, but I couldn’t wait.”

Rey moved the menu from her face. “Traitor.”

“Hello Rey, in for lunch?” Suzie appeared noiselessly at the table, her pen poised and ready over her order pad. “I hope you’re not on one of those crazy diets again. You don’t even need to lose weight. As Buster always says when he’s trying to convince me to gain a few, men like women with a little meat on their bones.”

Rey looked at her in disgust, “Eh, thanks?”

Suzie didn’t catch the tone.

Rey tapped the side of the menu near the image of the burger and fries. “I’ll have ...” She squirmed a little in her seat. “... the Caesar salad,” Rey said, “with the dressing on the side.”

“Fries?” Suzie asked.

Rey shook her head.

“You have more willpower than me. Anyway, you gals need anything at all, you let me know.
