Chapter Fourteen
The Killing of Arthur Thompson Junior
On Friday evening, 17 August 1991, approximately four months after bolting from Dungavel, I was in Bobby Glover’s house along with Paul Ferris, Joe Hanlon, Bobby himself and his young son Robert, who was perhaps three or four years old at the time and in his bed fast asleep. It seemed like any other normal weekend until Ferris, Glover and Hanlon disappeared upstairs to put the finishing touches to the murder plot they had waited so long to execute. At this stage I knew nothing about what was happening, or what was about to happen, although I did suspect something very serious was looming that night.
As I sat downstairs on my own, I could hear their voices as they laughed and joked up in the bedroom. The time had arrived when they were going to shoot and kill Arthur Thompson Junior, the eldest son of the Glasgow crime boss Arthur Thompson Senior, right outside his home on his first weekend leave from Noranside Open Prison. Arthur Junior had been convicted back in 1985 for possession and supply of heroin, and many believed he had been set up by none other than Ferris himself. Young Arthur had waited a long time for this weekend home leave, and so had his enemies. The execution Ferris and his two pals were about to commit would go down in Glaswegian underworld history as igniting a murderously gruesome chain of events that subsequently claimed the lives of many other criminals. This was a do-or-die mission where everything was at stake, and Ferris and Tam McGraw, the masterminds behind the murder plot, knew that if they botched this hit then there would be swift revenge. They would be as good as dead themselves. Although Hanlon and Glover were heavily involved in the murder they were about to commit, they were merely the footsoldiers for Ferris and McGraw in this ruthlessly executed and well-planned hit. When Ferris, Hanlon and Glover came downstairs, I noticed that Hanlon was wearing a fake black moustache and was carrying a duplicated set of square taxicab licence plates. Ferris then frivolously chucked what I believe was a fake handgun at me, saying, ‘Feel the weight of that thing.’
I had no choice but to catch the weapon in mid-flight, but I remember thinking to myself, ‘What’s he doing this for? My dabs are on that now.’
I got the impression that he wanted my prints on that gun, imitation or not, and he didn’t give me time to check to see if it was the real thing. It might have been a fake that Glover wanted out of the house before they left. Annoyed, I made sure I wiped it clean before I handed it back. I was still very much in the dark as to what the three of them were up to, or where they were going, but there was no doubt in my mind they were up to no good. Ferris looked relaxed, or it
