Chapter Sixteen

Julia had fully intended to stay awake for the flight to Rome. After all, when else would she have the chance to fly on a private jet, and with Parker Black, of all people?

But they’d left at midnight so they could make it to Rome by mid-afternoon the same day. As soon as Julia said goodbye to the lights of Seattle and accepted a glass of champagne from the on-call stewardess, she passed out on the plush recliner that was softer than her own bed.

When she awoke to the bright sunlight over Europe, she found Parker in the same place she’d been in when Julia fell asleep—lounging in one of the chairs, looking over designs for an upcoming line while making notes at the sides of the pages. Had Parker gone to sleep at all? Having changed into a fresh pair of clothes, she looked alert as ever as she quipped that “stealing” the family’s jet had been a good decision.

“I wouldn’t have been able to get half as much work done on a commercial line. Not even in First Class.” Parker directed that at the stewardess, who averted her gaze with a blush on her cheeks.

Have they… slept together? It wouldn’t be out of character for Parker, after all.

But Julia tried not to think about it as she buckled up for landing. Parker had told her they needed to reach Rome by the afternoon because of an appointment. Julia had assumed it was an appointment with the designer at the center of the trip. But she should have known better. As soon as immigration boarded their plane and checked their passports, Parker announced they were heading straight to one of the international raceways on the outskirts of the city.

Because, apparently, Parker was also in Rome to buy some Lamborghini from an Italian collector.

Julia sighed. Of course she was.

“I’m simply killing two birds with one stone,” Parker said.

Their chauffeured car took off down the city streets. Julia narrowed her eyes in her “girlfriend’s” direction, ignoring the sights of Rome that passed them by outside the tinted windows.

“The meeting on Monday was always going to happen,” Parker continued. “When this opportunity popped up, I couldn’t turn it down. Do you know how long I’ve been looking for this exact car? Now that it’s on the market, I was the first in line to buy it.”

“Monday,” Julia repeated back to her. “The meeting is on Monday?”

Parker maneuvered a hand to Julia’s knee. “Jules.” Here comes that dripping charm. It was like Parker had the magical ability to assuage all of Julia’s worries with nothing more than some sweet words. “I’m going to get this out of the way, then we’ll go straight to the villa and spend the entire weekend luxuriating in our private retreat and playing tourist together. After my meeting on Monday, we’ll fly back and be home by Tuesday morning. This way, we get to write off the whole vacation.”

Julia had planned to be on semi-vacation this weekend, although she was still glued to the internet to ensure her work with Parker was paying off.
