A TUGGING SENSATION pulled me from a swirling night. A hand held mine and dragged me into the light. A face appeared. Desiree. I tried to pull away, but she held me tight.

“Don’t fight me, please!”

Her desperate tone made me pause. Slowly I took in my surroundings. I stood disoriented in my, no, Lady Temperance’s death chamber. I encompassed her physically no longer. Upon the disheveled bed, her languid body appeared ashen. Lady Temperance Nithercott lay dead before me. I turned to Desiree. “Why? Why did you kill her?”

Tears streaked Desiree’s translucent face. “I didn’t. I could never hurt her. She is my heart and soul!”

The door opened and three men and a woman entered the room. Mathew, a priest, an unknown man, and the living Desiree hijacked my attention.

The priest stood vigil and prayed over the body as the living Desiree wept near the doorway. Mathew looked down at the body as the unknown man checked Lady Temperance’s pulse. I realized he must be a doctor.

“She’s dead,” announced the doctor as he finished his inspection of the body.

The living Desiree wailed and fell to the floor. Desiree’s ghost held my arm tight as the scene from the past replayed itself.

The priest crossed himself. “I’ll give her last rights.”

“No,” Mathew snapped as he pushed the doctor aside and knelt next to Lady Temperance. “This evil deed must not stand! You must marry us! You must!”

“She’s gone, son,” the priest said softly. “You cannot marry a corpse. It’s against God.”

Mathew turned to the doctor. “Are you sure she’s dead? She can’t be. You can tell the priest she’s alive and he must believe you. You’re a doctor.”

The two exchanged a strange look. Once more the doctor examined Lady Temperance. “I can make out a faint heartbeat. But she won’t last long.”

I snapped my head toward Desiree’s ghost. I knew the doctor lied. I embodied her — and she had died.

Mathew looked up at the priest. “Do it. Marry us! Quickly!”

The priest hesitated, uncertain. “She cannot speak her vows.”

“She’s already spoken them to me in private,” Mathew claimed. “She wants this. Don’t deny her!”

“She didn’t,” the living Desiree cried out in anguish.

“Shut up,” Mathew screamed. He glared at the priest. “My sister can’t know the intimate secrets we shared. Not marrying us could damn her soul. She must marry me, for us both! I must be able to find her again in heaven!”

“Hurry man.” said the doctor to encourage the priest.

“Very well.” The priest turned the pages in his bible to the matrimonial passages.

“You can’t do this! She’s dead!” Desiree turned toward the priest in desperation. “If she had the choice, she would never marry him!”

“Get her out,” Mathew growled as he stood in anger and pointed at the door.

The doctor scrambled to the door and called in the butler and his first. They forcefully dragged Desiree from the room as she fought and screamed, cursing her brother.

The priest hesitated once more. Mathew put his arm around him. “My sister is upset. I thought they were like sisters, but now I wonder if my sister secretly hated her.
