Chapter Nine

When Sunday dawned, and the ferry decked with bunting had disgorged the wedding party in all its finery, Tina was able to witness the spectacle of a complex menu for a large number of guests being presented by a master chef and brought to the table with slick efficiency. Nick Taylor, the affable easygoing holidaymaker had vanished, to be replaced by a demanding, ruthlessly efficient and exacting professional. Although he didn’t shout his orders like some chefs, his air of command ensured that every instruction he issued was obeyed with alacrity.

The effect was noticed by the guests, who were lavish in their praise of the food, the service and congratulated the koumbaro for the wisdom behind his choice of venue for such an important event.

The compliments of the newlyweds and their guests were heaped on Tina, on Andrew and on Durim. As the music played and the traditional dances continued, they asked if the chef would come forward to be thanked, but Tina informed them that he was busy in the kitchen. ‘He is pleased that you enjoyed the meal and wishes you every happiness, but he asked to be excused, he’s been a little preoccupied today without Milena. There’s been a wedding banquet, you know,’ she added with a smile.

That caused the couple to chuckle, but the groom said, ‘We are particularly grateful that the occasion was such a success given the very sad illness of Miss Petrakis. It would have been terribly disappointing but understandable had the event been cancelled, but as it is, to be able to arrange this so efficiently is extremely impressive. We are returning to Acropoli and tomorrow we will visit Miss Petrakis in the hospital, or if that is not permitted we will write to express our gratitude. Also, rest assured we will be singing the praises of this taverna and your chef to everyone we can.’
