Chapter 26

Tech Savvy

Alex sat in the kitchen of their secluded safe house monitoring the news and police band radio. He knew that the local police would have been called to respond to the Bishop residence but he certainly did not expect to see a state wide bulletin on the local news asking for information leading to finding Martin and Cady Bishop. They made no allegations of kidnapping or searching for a suspect but it concerned him still to see Martin’s face in the television.

Still paying attention to the news he continued working on secure cell phone lines so that their location couldn’t be traced when making a call. It was a simple practice that Alex was familiar with, requiring an inhibitor chip to be installed near the SIM card of a phone. As he neared completion of the last cell phone, the news again caught his absolute attention.

Watching intently at the on-scene video of last night’s attack at the Bishop residence, he recognized the face of the local Sheriff, Jon Faulk. It wasn’t the Sheriff that caught his interest but the brunet woman dressed in a black suit. Standing 5’8” was the fair complected Agent Shamhat. If the FBI is taking over the case so quickly then they must have information linking us to the crime, he thought. Agent Shamhat has been the agent in charge of locating and arresting any members of the Choir. Unfortunately for us, she knows Gabriel’s face as well, he thought.

Alex heard the front door open and close. Seconds later Cady Bishop walked into the kitchen and opened the refrigerator to find a suitable beverage. Alex noticed that she had not yet seen the news and made a snap decision to turn off the television before she could find out what was going on. When Cady finally emerged from the refrigerator with a Diet Pepsi in her hand, she quietly pulled out a chair and sat at the kitchen table beside Alex.

“Whatcha working on,” asked Cady.

“I am making our cell phones untraceable,” he said sliding Cady’s phone to her.

She picked up the phone and sorted through her contacts and messages. Alex had subsequently erased the text messages that Jan had been sending her throughout last night and this morning. Cady appeared satisfied that her information was still saved the phone and placed it back on the table.

“So I am free to make phone calls?”

“No,” said Alex. “You are free to call me or Gabriel, as well as your father on this phone. I don’t want you contacting any of your friends. It’s not that we don’t trust you Cady, but it would be dangerous for them if anyone from the Choir found out that you were in contact with them.”

“I understand,” Cady said disappointed.

Alex pondered for a second what she and Gabriel had talked about as they were hanging the surveillance equipment around the perimeter but decided that it was not important. He continued working on Martin Bishop’s cell phone but stopped himself short.

“Where is Gabriel?”

“He is finishing up with the cameras.
