Genny called Howard from work Monday morning. She felt guilty and embarrassed after his phone conversation with Jack, but Howard was still her friend and she owed him at least some explanation.

“Howard? It’s Genny.”

“Hello, Genny.” Disappointment laced his voice. “Howard, I’m sorry about . . . the phone call. I know what you must be thinking . . . the way you must be feeling about me, and I want you to know I never meant for any of it to happen. Somehow it just did.”

Silence. “Are you in love with him?”

She started to lie. “I’m . . . yes. Yes, Howard, I’m in love with him.”

“I should have guessed that, I suppose. A woman like you wouldn’t go to bed with a man unless she felt something for him. I wish you could have felt that way about me.”

“I care for you, Howard, you know I do. I’ve always felt a great deal of affection for you.”

“I wanted to marry you, Genny. What does Brennen want?” Genny didn’t answer. She knew what Jack wanted from a woman, and she had already given him that. Her fingers tightened around the phone.

“Genny?”

“I’m sorry I disappointed you, Howard.”

“I’m worried about you, Genny. The man is nothing but a no-account hustler. He’s out for only one thing.”

“It doesn’t matter,” she said softly. An ache suddenly rose in her throat. “It doesn’t change the way I feel.”

“I’m still your friend, Genny. I hope you won’t forget that. I’ll be here if you need me.”

“Thank you, Howard.” Genny quietly hung up the phone. Howard had always been there for her. How much longer before Jack would be gone? She didn’t want to think about it. It made her heart hurt too much.
