Chapter 15

UNAWARE THEY HAD COMPANY, Emmanuel gave Raoul a cold stare. “I never was and never will be one of you. I’ll help the Sages win the battle, if it’s the last thing I do.”

“You won’t change your mind?” Raoul asked.

Emmanuel thought he’d heard, for a fraction of a second, pleading in his voice. But not even that would have changed his stance. He shook his head resolutely. “The way of life you have chosen is not mine. I may be dead, but I, at least, still have my values.”

“Oh? And what are those?” Raoul questioned. “What’s so important you’re ready to throw up the chance of a lifetime?”

As he looked at the one that had been his friend, Emmanuel pitied him. The moment evaporated, and he smiled sadly. “Friendship and justice,” were the three words he said solemnly.

Raoul stared at him, as if not believing his ears. Then, he laughed dryly. “You live in a dream, Emmanuel. And when you wake up, it will be too late.”

“On the contrary, Raoul, it is you who lives in a dream. And you know what the worst part is?” When nothing but silence answered him, Emmanuel said, “It’s that until quite recently, I shared the same dream.”

Raoul’s facial expression didn’t change, but Emmanuel noticed a flicker in his eyes that betrayed his emotion.

I have to give it another try, the ghost thought. For the sake of old times.

“Raoul, don’t fall in his trap. Cortés is out for power, and he’ll do anything to get it. Whatever he has told you, Gustav will, sooner or later, rally him.”

His words reached empty ears and Raoul only grinned manically. “And when he does, it will give us all more power. Emmanuel, his sword is... unbelievable. Don’t miss out on this!”

Emmanuel shook his head, then turned his back to his old friend and walked away. A few steps further, he sighed, “I am sorry I ever trusted you. As of now, we are enemies, Raoul.”

His friend’s last words were toneless. “Then there is no need for me here.”

Emmanuel felt the air changing, and when he glanced back, Raoul had vanished. The phantom sighed and raised his face to the moon, his eyes mirroring his sorrow. “No, indeed, Raoul. And there is no need me for me to wait any longer. I have chosen my path, and you yours, my old friend. Now, we’re on opposite sides of this battle. And I’ll fight you if I have to.”

Exhaling heavily, Emmanuel dematerialized back to the hotel. He was still completely unaware of the unconscious Wiseman in a tree, his energy drained – and no defensive barrier whatsoever around his body.

“It will not work.”

Gustav turned around to face the demon, masking his surprise. When he’d entered into the devil’s bargain, he’d not signed up to have his every movement be spied on. It was fast becoming annoying.

“What?” Gustav questioned the wraith, scowling.

“Emmanuel will not join, I have told you before to ssstop wasssting your effortsss.”

“I will not!”

“Why do you
