After school that day, Laura walked home with Adam. At lunch, she had tried to find Nix, but her friend was nowhere in sight. In the end, Laura ate her lunch alone, outside, on the steps of the school. From where she sat, she could see the cemetery down the street. Police cars were still in front and there appeared to be constant movement to and from the section where the graves had been vandalised. The officers had already left the school, but not before making an announcement over the intercom. They said that they were following up on some leads, but that they still needed the help of students who might know something about what had happened. ‘Any information, no matter how small or unimportant to you, might be critical to us,’ the officer said. Once the police had finished talking, Mr Garrett spoke as well. He urged students to come forward and help solve the crime.

Laura listened to it all with some detachment. She was still terribly disturbed by the vandalism in the cemetery. But more than that, she was upset by Nix’s behaviour. Why was Nix avoiding her and acting so bizarre? Why didn’t she seem to care about the incident?

‘So, what are you saying – that you think Nix did it?’ asked Adam as they walked side by side past the cemetery once more. There was an eerie feeling in the air, as if the crime still hung there like a shroud.

‘No! I don’t know. Of course not!’ Laura replied. It was impossible to imagine that Nix might be involved in some way. But what other explanation was there for the way she was acting? First there was her lack of interest in Sara’s journal, and now she didn’t seem to care about the vandalism. ‘You saw her this morning, Adam. She barely looked at us. And she asked all those questions about what would happen if they caught the person who did it. Then she made it sound as if the whole thing was unimportant.’

‘So you’re saying it’s kind of like those stories you hear about your sweet next-door neighbour turning out to be a serial killer, or something like that,’ said Adam as he shifted his backpack from one shoulder to the other.

‘Stop it! This isn’t a joke.’ It was hard enough to think that Nix might be involved in the incident. Adam wasn’t helping.

‘So what are you going to do about it?’ Adam asked.

Laura shook her head. ‘I have no idea. But I do know that I’ve got to talk to Nix and try to figure out what’s going on.’ That’s what was missing. Without a real conversation it all just became speculation and gossip, and that was a dangerous thing.

‘Do you want me to do anything? Remember what John says about getting by with a little help from your friends.’

Laura shook her head and smiled. ‘Thanks. I’ll let you know if anything happens.’

Laura started telephoning Nix as soon as she got home from the orthodontist.
