CHAPTER SIX

A SHORT while later Mrs. Crumbs answered the phone, chatting with Jordan for quite a while before hanging up without even calling Hailey. “It was Jordan,” she said. “You can move back already tonight.”

“Really? That’s great!”

“I invited Jordan to dinner with us—then he can drive you back.”

“Oh, I could walk, that’s not a problem. It’s only a few minutes’ walk.”

“You’ve got a lot of things here—it could be cumbersome to carry. Don’t look a gift neighbor in the mouth! There’s a free home-cooked meal in it for him—a bachelor knows better than to turn down an offer like that.”

Thank God for Mrs. Crumbs’ three cats and one dog. With Mrs. Crumbs seeking Jordan’s opinion on everything from their food to the likelihood of permanent trauma to being stuck in the cat flap, Hailey could contribute with a few comments about Helena, but Robby was mercifully kept out of the picture. Still, the possibility had her nerves on edge and she breathed a sigh of relief after dinner when Mrs. Crumbs shooed Jordan upstairs to take a look at her cats while she and Hailey did the dishes.

“How lovely that Robby called,” Mrs. Crumbs mused. “He must be lonely over there, seeing you so rarely.”

“Yes. But he has his friends. And we’re used to this. We make good use of our time together.”

“Tell me, dear, are there any…women on these oil rigs?”

Good question. Were there? Hailey squirted soap into a pot and cursed herself for not doing more oil rig research, then realized what worried Mrs. Crumbs. “Oh, I don’t have to worry about that. Robby could be surrounded by the most beautiful women in the world but he would never cheat on me. He loves me. He’d never hurt me.”

“It can be difficult for a man to be away from his woman for such a long time.”

“No more so than for the woman,” Hailey bristled. Then she winked. “Don’t worry. I have my ways to keep him in line. I send him e-mails to remind him what he’s missing and what he can expect when he gets back.”

Mrs. Crumbs cackled in delight. “I love young women today,” she confided. “I wish I’d had the nerve to send Mr. Crumbs sexy letters.”

“What in the world are you two talking about?”

Jordan’s voice, brimming with amusement, boomed from behind and Hailey nearly splashed Mrs. Crumbs with hot soapy water.

“Hailey knows how to keep her husband in line,” Mrs. Crumbs informed him. “Cybersex.”

“What? No, wait a minute, I didn’t say—”

“I’ve read about it and I think it’s an excellent thing for a young couple stranded on opposite sides of the world. Much better than straying, that’s for sure.”

Jordan looked between them, but Hailey turned back to the sink and refused to meet his eyes. Then he coughed, seemingly in lieu of actually saying something. Oh, God. How had this happened?

“Cyber…”

“Yes,” Mrs. Crumbs confirmed. “Sexy e-mails written in the nude to remind him what’s waiting for him at home. A most excellent idea, I think.
