Chapter Four

Mason

I handed Nora a glass of cabernet. All night, Buck’s had been standing room only. Montana had played one hell of a set. Being in love with my best friend clearly agreed with her.

Throughout the entire show, Dylan sat front and center, swooning like a lovesick teen. He was still on the mend after his fall in Nashville. As his doctor, I’d recommended he stay home because a concert wasn’t the best place for someone with a concussion, but Dylan never listened to anyone. Especially not me. In his eyes, I was the doofus he used to do dumb shit with.

Thanks to a combination of red wine and dancing, Nora’s cheeks had flushed a pretty pink, and she looked delicious enough to eat. Before the night ended, I would do just that.

A lot of our old friends hugged her the second they saw her, most of them already aware that we’d had a baby.

“I didn’t know I needed a night out so badly,” she said, waving to one of the girls she used to cheer with. “Thanks for suggesting this. It’s just so lovely seeing everyone again.”

I tipped my beer bottle in her direction. “We should go on date nights more often.”

She gave me a peculiar look. “This isn’t a date, Mase. What happened earlier was wrong. We can’t...”

“Why not? We’re good together.”

She shook her head, the waves of her chocolate brown hair bouncing over her shoulders. “You don’t want me, you want Jake. You’d be fine if I said I was going back to New York and was giving you full custody.”

A rare flash of irritation set me on edge. Where the hell had she gotten that idea from? I was putting an end to it now. “Now you listen here—”

“—Mason and Nora, sitting in a tree, k-i-s-s-i-n-g.” Melinda, obviously three sheets to the wind, slinked up beside us. “Bless your white-trash heart, Nora. Looks like you got what you always wanted. A rich baby daddy. I knew you’d end up back in Shady Peaks. Thought you were too good for us, didn’t you? Just like you thought you were the hot stuff at school.”

I opened my mouth to defend Nora, but she shot me a look that said I got this.

“I might have had to come back to this town, but at least I had the balls to try. At least I did what I could to make something of my life instead of just settling.”

Melinda placed a hand on her chest like she’d been mortally wounded. I wanted to applaud Nora for standing up to the queen bee, but I didn’t want to add fuel to the fire.

“I’m very happy with my life choices.”

“Then why do you have to make yourself feel better by making other people feel like crap? At least I can say I tried. I can look back on my life and say I gave it my best. Can you say the same?”

“How dare you.”

“No,” Nora said, taking a step forward. “How dare you.
