CHAPTER 21

Guin called the San Ybel at eight-thirty the next morning and asked to be connected to Mrs. Thompson’s office.

The phone rang, and a woman answered.

“Mrs. Thompson’s office.”

“Good morning,” said Guin. “My name’s Guinivere Jones. I’m calling to arrange an appointment to see Mrs. Thompson.”

“I’m afraid she’s quite busy,” said the woman.

“I understand that. But a mutual friend, Betty Jeffers, spoke to Mrs. Thompson last night, and Mrs. Thompson said she’d make time for me today. I’m a reporter with the San-Cap Sun-Times .”

“Oh, you’re that Guinivere Jones!” said the woman. “I just love reading your restaurant reviews!”

“Thank you,” said Guin. “So, could you squeeze me in? I only need a few minutes of Mrs. Thompson’s time.”

“Let me see,” said the woman. There was a brief pause. “How soon can you get here?”

“I could be there at nine.”

“That should be okay. She has a meeting at nine-thirty, but she’s usually here by nine.”

“I’ll get there as soon as I can,” said Guin. “Thank you. I’m sorry, I didn’t catch your name.”

“It’s Marjorie.”

“Thank you, Marjorie.”

They ended the call and Guin quickly went to her closet to change.
