CHAPTER SEVEN

BAITING her might not be very smart, Trey admitted, but it certainly was entertaining. It also had the side benefit of distracting her from bringing up topics which might tempt Jason to start asking uncomfortable questions, if he happened to overhear a chance word.

Darcy smiled at him. “Tell me right now,” she suggested. “Because I’m sure the crew would be agog to find out that we’re not already sleeping together.”

She really was delightful, calling his bluff like that. “You’re making my argument for me, you know. As long as you’re pointing out how silly it is not to share a bed, I don’t even have to try to be convincing.”

“That wasn’t what I said. Anyway, save it for someone who’s interested, Trey.”

“Oh, you’re interested, all right.” He stretched out a hand to cup her cheek.

Darcy reached up to the archway and pulled a rolled towel out of the rainbow.

From the corner of his eye, Trey saw a streak of yellow descending toward his face as she gave the towel an expert flip, cracking it like a whip. “Hey,” he protested. “Easy on the merchandise.”

“I’ll buy it as a souvenir.”

“I can think of more memorable ones.” He pulled it away from her and draped the terry cloth over her head. “That’s not your best color, you know.”

“Watch the hair,” she ordered and blindly pulled down two more towels, one with each hand, waving them as if she were taunting a bull.

“The heck with your hair. I like it better tousled anyway.”

“If all of you are ready to stop being juvenile,” Jason said, “let’s get to work.”

The crew had been grinning, but Trey noted that the smiles suddenly died under the lash of Jason’s voice.

Obviously Darcy was feeling reluctant to settle to the task, for she took her time rolling up the towels once more. Then she stood on her toes, trying to fit them back into the metal rings which formed the rainbow arch.

Trey watched with patient interest, intrigued by the softly rounded curves of her lithe body as she reached as far as she could above her head. Though she’d been just exactly tall enough to pull the towels down, it seemed she lacked a couple of inches of being able to put them back into place.

Finally she turned to him. “Would you help me with this?”

“In return for that smile—yes, of course.”

She held out the towels, but instead of taking them to put back in place, Trey reached for her instead. With his hands on her waist, he lifted her toward the arch.

She gave a little shriek and for a moment he thought she was going to overbalance them both. Then she clutched the support of the archway, put the towels back so they looked almost the same as before she’d started yanking at them and looked down at him. “I’m finished. You can put me down now. And warn me next time.”

“I did warn you,” Trey said. He set her down, but he let his hands linger at her waist.
