I have asked him about the extra money which he owes me and have written to him about it. I did not get any satisfaction and have placed the matter in the hands of the War Agriculture Committee. He always paid me my money on a Saturday, but not all that I was entitled to. He was a bad-tempered man and a heavy drinker. He would grumble and order me about especially when he was in drink.

Fabian finished the contents of his glass and pulled his pipe and a pouch of tobacco from the pocket of his grey trench coat. Potter might have been a bastard, but that did not necessarily make him a murderer. Fabian tamped the tobacco in the bowl, lit a match, and pondered the brutality of the crime. It had been pure overkill. If Potter was the murderer, why had he gone to such violent extremes? One could have easily killed a man in Walton’s deteriorated state with their bare hands or a well-placed blow with one of Walton’s walking sticks. Why beat the old man, stab him through the face, and then slash his throat? Perhaps the gruesome nature of the killing was meant to serve as a distraction. Police would think a mad man was on the prowl, for who would believe a local resident to be capable of such an atrocity? Then again, no one in Lower Quinton seemed too concerned by any such prospect. Is that because they knew who did it? It seemed impossible that in a village of no more than 500 people, there wasn’t someone who knew something.

No one seemed to have much to say in regards to suspect or victim. In his first statement to Fabian and Webb, Potter mentioned a man named George Higgins, whom he believed to be Walton’s ‘only friend’. If Higgins was indeed close to Walton, perhaps he was privy to information others were not. Questioning Higgins, Fabian told Webb over their empty glasses, would be their next order of business.
