There were some links to mysterious organisations, but nothing Phillip could put his finger on.

What little he had found out about them had him very nervous. Some of their members were suspected superpower criminals, while others were people who hadn’t quite made the grade when being tested for membership in the official Association of Superheroes. All of them had reason to hate the existing superpower establishment.

If these were the people Daine’s uncle had allied himself with, in what Phillip assumed to be some sort of crusade for revenge, Daine was in real trouble. They could have been the ones using superpowers to make it look as if Daine was to blame. Exposing them before the trial took place tomorrow, without any kind of evidence, was going to be impossible.

He was going to have to tell Daine what was going on, so the man could protect himself. He was also going to make sure Daine’s lawyer was someone competent to defend his lover. If Phillip left it up to the system, or whoever was pulling the strings here, Daine was sure to end up with an incompetent fool.

His phone rang and he jumped from the shock of being pulled back into reality. His office was already half dark, the sun outside about to set. He’d been here a lot longer than he’d planned. Checking caller ID made him sigh with relief. It was Daine.

“Hey, babe. How are you?” Phillip wasn’t going to ask how it went, but the fact that Daine hadn’t called earlier in the day surely meant he’d at least made it to the second round.

“I need to see you, please.” Daine sounded neutral, as if he was holding something back.

“Sure.” Shit, maybe his assumption had been wrong and Daine needed consoling?

“Where do you want to meet?”

“I feel like a quiet night at home.” Daine swallowed. “I hope you don’t mind?”

“Of course not.” That didn’t sound good at all. “I’m still at the college, so I’ll only be a few minutes.”

“No, actually I meant my real home, my apartment in Nob Hill. My roommates are out of town, so we’ll have the place to ourselves.” Daine proceeded to give him directions.
