CHAPTER 10

Ava spent most of their ride back to Ashbone carefully watching her brother. Apparently, he must have felt her eyes on his back, because his behavior towards Emily was rather decent. About fifteen minutes in, Ava relaxed enough to join the conversation about the shopping trip. Emily was still agitated about her role as stylist; she couldn’t stop talking about how this was the most difficult challenge she ever faced.

‘Thank you for helping me out today, I don’t know what I would have done without you,’ Ava said gratefully when Blake pulled up to Emily’s house.

‘Yeah, instead of nice clothes you probably would have ended up with a potato sack to cover you from head to toe,’ Emily replied with a wink.

‘It’s not entirely impossible,’ Ava laughed.

As Emily got out of the car, she sent Blake one last gaze and smiled at him shyly.

After Ava and Blake got back on the road, Blake became strangely excited.

‘I didn’t want to show this to you in front of Emily, because she could spill the beans, but look what I bought,’ he said nervously as he took out a small, beautifully decorated beige box from his pocket.

‘What is it?’ She said as she grabbed the box from his hand.

‘Be careful!’ He hissed with an angry look.

‘Chill out, you act like it’s…’ Ava didn’t finish the sentence, because what she saw took her breath away.

Inside the box was the most wonderful bracelet she has seen in her life.

‘Diamonds,’ Blake announced proudly.

‘You gotta be kidding,’ Ava moaned with disbelief, staring at the beautiful treasure in her hand.

‘No, I’m not kidding. It’s a bracelet from a special limited collection, made from white gold and incrusted with twelve black diamonds.’

‘You must have lost your mind. Why would you buy something like this? This is something people buy for their twentieth wedding anniversary or something like that… not as a birthday present for a seventeen year old girl. That must have cost a fortune! Where did you get so much money?’

‘Guess, it’s not so hard,’ he laughed heartily, not bothered by her critique.

‘I guess it’s from your stupid fights,’ she growled with discontent.

‘That’s right,’ he confirmed cheerfully. ‘I saved all the money I’ve won for the past six months so I could afford this bracelet without mom and dad’s help. Not too bad, huh?’

‘And how are you going to explain to them how you got so much money?’

‘I’m not. They won’t see the bracelet. And that’s why I’m showing it to you now, because I want to know what you think before I give it to Sally. Isn’t it beautiful?’

Ava wanted to lie, but she couldn’t. She knew that she wouldn’t convince him to take it back to the store anyway.

‘Beautiful is an understatement… it’s gorgeous,’ she admitted reluctantly.

Blake grinned widely and took the bracelet back from Ava and hid it deep it his pocket as they approached their house.

‘Isn’t Sally going to wonder how you were able to afford such an expensive gift? She doesn’t know about these fights,’ Ava asked, trying to keep calm.
