After James Cullen left the house, JL finished loading her backpack in tight silence. Her ears were still ringing from the boy’s bizarre statements. She shook her head, wondering for just a moment if he had been hallucinating. Highly unlikely. His mind wasn’t impaired. His problem was a sieve like mouth that allowed every thought to pass through unchecked. He wasn’t aware that when he said inappropriate things, he hurt people.
If he were her son…
She shook off the thought. No need to go there. What pissed her off, though, was the revelation Kevin had lied to her. After promising he would keep her secrets, he had spilled them to Elliott. She couldn’t forgive him for violating her privacy. Her fingers curled, and her nails bit into her palms as she resisted the urge to punch him. “I vote we table the questions we both have until we find Austin, but I do have one I need answered right now.”
Kevin picked up the coiled rope and attached it to a loop on his pack. “If I can answer with a yes or no, I will.”
“Braham’s in his late forties. Did he go inside the old cave more than fifty years ago?” A sinking, twisting feeling wrapped around her throat. As outrageous as it seemed, she was inclined to believe Kevin would say yes.
“It’s possible. Now I have a question for you. Why’d you tell Meredith about Austin?”
“I didn’t. You told Elliott.” She shoved her pack aside. “I’m using all the self-control I have to keep from using your abs as a punching bag.” The shadow of strong emotion flitted across his eyes. “You broke your promise,” she continued. “You did exactly what others have accused you of doing. You have a hole in your head and no off switch. Everything you know just pours out. Exactly like James Cullen.”
Kevin fell silent as he sat on the sofa, arms propped on his knees, his large hands clasped. “I didn’t tell him. I swear.”
“No one else knew about Austin. If not you, who?” She could barely get the words past the constriction in her throat.
“I’ve never been surprised by the information Elliott and David can uncover, but this time I’m stymied.” Kevin’s anger was back, rising, smoldering behind his eyes. He couldn’t conceal it now. “David has methods. And I feel as betrayed as you do.”
“Yeah, you have even more reason than I do. You and Elliott look alike, but it never occurred to me you were actually related. My opinion of Elliott is now worse than it was.”
“I don’t blame you.”
She slung her pack over her shoulders and adjusted the weight, relieved that Kevin hadn’t betrayed her—but someone had invaded her privacy, and that pissed her off. “As long as it didn’t come from you, I can deal with it.”
Kevin jumped to his feet, his voice gravelly when he said, “I wouldn’t do that to you.”
She unclenched her jaw and relaxed her shoulders. “Where we’re going, I have to be able to trust you.
