And I did have sweet dreams. Dreams filled with white horses, and declarations of love, and delicious mousse cake, and the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day parade. Dreams filled with Arie’s low, melodic voice, his gorgeous navy eyes, and the sensation of his warm hand resting on top of mine.

I woke up the next morning smiling, my stomach a mess of butterflies. The first thing I thought of was Arie. Did he sleep well? What was he doing now?

Thump!

My thoughts were interrupted by the smack of rubber on pavement and a loud cheer coming from outside the window.

“Urrrrgh,” Avery groaned as she rolled over in bed, clutched a pillow over her head. “Make it stop!”

There was another smack, another cheer. Then, “That’s about to be H-O-R, bro.”

The deep, familiar voice made my heart race as I remembered that same voice whispering to me just last night. What was going on out there? I ran over to the window and peeked out into the backyard in time to see Cruz grab the ball from Arie and take a shot.

“Swish!” Cruz hollered as the ball sank through the hoop. Triumphantly, he seized the ball again and dribbled it across the Jensen’s huge, custom basketball court before taking another shot.

Thunk! The ball bounced off the rim.

“Awwwh, so close,” Cruz moaned.

“Oh, great,” Avery groaned. “Other idiot’s here, too.”

“Not close enough!” I watched as Arie swept forward, stole the ball from Cruz in one graceful, seamless movement. Then, with his eyes on the basket, he placed his hands and jumped, launching the ball high into the air. It arced perfectly, beautifully, and swished through the net.

Arie’s face lit up as he watched the ball fall through, and he gave Cruz some hand gesture I couldn’t see. Cruz laughed and muttered something to Arie in response. Then, to my surprise, Arie looked directly up at Avery’s window. At me.

He winked and gave me a salute. Like he knew I was watching and he’d done it for me.

My cheeks burned red and I gave him a little wave. A flash of memory from last night came back to me—him leaning closer and closer, his voice low as he described the power of anticipation, the way his breath raced across my lips.

If I thought this dating coach thing would help me get over my crush on Arie, I was wrong. Very wrong.

I was still looking at Arie when I heard the rustle of covers behind me. A loud sigh as feet hit the floor. “Might as well give up on trying to sleep.”

Avery came up beside me and threw the window open. Stuck her head out. “Do you morons really need to play HORSE at the crack of dawn?”

“Try crack of 11am.” Cruz smirked.

Avery’s eyebrows shot up in surprise and she glanced at her alarm clock. “Ho-ly, we slept late.” She slammed the window shut and turned to me. “We must have been seriously tired.”

“Apparently. How’d you sleep, Ave?”

“Good. But not as good as you.” She elbowed me lightly. “I got up in the middle of the night to grab a glass of water and you were dead to the world.
