CHAPTER THIRTEEN

‘Again,’ Rylan snapped.

I groaned as I whirled cleansing around in my hands, trying to turn it into a portal. The magic stretched and shuddered between my fingers as I pushed at its edges, trying to pull it out like dough. Rylan stood watching me, his arms crossed over his chest.

It had been a week since our estate had moved to Austria, and it was another much more painful training session. Even after our moments together, the young blond man was still just as ruthless as the first time we had trained together.

‘Come on, Aura, focus!’

I sucked in a breath and yanked at the tendrils of magic, forcing them to open. Slowly, a portal began to form. Inside the circle was a mysterious black ink that murmured a greeting as I widened the portal to the size of a dinner plate. The hairs on the back of my neck raised at the smell pouring from the portal. It smelt of pomegranate and sea salt. My hands kneaded and pulled at the fleshy magic. Just as I managed to get it to open wider, the circle suddenly snapped back in my hands. I gasped, and my knees wobbled as all the magic was sucked right back inside my skin.

Rylan sighed and pinched the bridge of his nose, his eyelids closing. ‘What happened?’ he asked.

‘I lost it. I’m sorry.’

He opened his eyes and glared at me. ‘Again.’

‘Rylan, please. I’m exhausted. Can we try again tomorrow?’

‘Again.’

My mouth snapped closed, and I felt the annoyance flare up in my belly. Quickly gathering my strength, I moved cleansing magic out through my palms and spread it out into a ball. I began pulling at the magic all over again, desperately wanting it to be a portal. Rylan watched me as I panted, my teeth clenched as I drew a portal in the air. In minutes, a six-foot-tall portal spun around between us, the deep depths of it shimmering like an evening sky. That same smell of lavender wafted from inside it. Oh, my circle. Did I just make a portal?

‘I did it,’ I whispered.

Rylan moved around the portal, inspecting it from every angle. He wore a crisp black suit with a white button-down and black loafers. I watched him while he inspected the portal. With one hand, he reached out and touched the edges of the portal, nodding when it didn’t snap shut.

‘Good,’ he said.

I breathed a sigh of relief, knowing that was the most praise I would receive. ‘I actually did it.’

A dark chuckle slipped from his mouth, surprising me. ‘Yes, you did.’

‘Now what?’

‘Close it.’

My hands reached for the portal, and I grabbed both sides. The magic whined as it shut and wormed back through me, sinking deep into my bones. I sighed as it came back to me. Rylan blinked as I rolled my head around and cracked my knuckles. When I looked at him, he raised an inquisitive eyebrow.

‘Congratulations,’ he said dryly. ‘Now you know how to make a cleansing portal.’

I bit my lip to suppress my squeals.
