âOW! IS THIS STUFF SUPPOSED to sting?â I howled. âNever mind, itâs because youâre applying it like youâre trying to swat a fly!
âWould you rather not be healed, dummy?â Laura responded. âI was saving this stuff because I knew youâd need it more than me. Your complaining is a funny way of saying âThanks for caring, Laura!ââ
Laura squeezed out another green glob from her vita-gel tube. She smeared it all over my face like she was fingerpainting. I had forgotten that Frost had given her that gel. It had been for her cheek, but seeing as she now wore a scar on it, she couldnât have used enough...
âA man in AI armor?â Manning said to himself. He stood in the corner of my room, more interested in his thoughts than in my condition. âIâve never seen anyone like that. That canât be all that he is. Thereâs more to him.â
That was the most confident statement Iâd ever heard from him.
âDonât forget that he can teleport!â Laura said. âThe AI and their technology...itâs just like what those robots said, Wander. No one understands tech like machines.â
âAs someone whoâs been on the receiving end of their might, I agree.â Manning inhaled quickly. I donât think Laura even noticed. âAnywho, we shouldnât stay in the Eachtra any longer than we have to. Not if the AIâs bounty hunter knows our location. Iâm surprised he didnât just take Mr. Locke while we slept.â
âCanât we just call the ship âStardustâ or something?â I complained. âManning has a point though. We should get the heck out of here. Itâs time to search that other place. Crimson Tower, right? Know anything about that place, Redhead?â
âJust stuff Iâve heard. Tallest structure in the city, home to the best view, that kind of thing. Iâd love to see the city from that point of view.â
âIf you want a good view, just look out the window while I drive the shipââ
âItâs not the same, donât try to ruin this!â
I smirked. âManning, are you down for the tower?â
âOf course! I admire a lovely view as much as the next person. Even though the Oppressed are our main objective. What business would they have in a place like that?â
âGood question. Not that it matters since weâll stop them. Letâs goâouch!â I tried to stand, but the pain reminded me that my butt had just been kicked. âMaybe five more minutes.â
I lay there for half an hour! You could have watched a full episode of a cartoon in that time! And the Oppressed: who knew what they could have done in that time?
Laura bounced in her seat like an excited child as I drove us to the Crimson Tower. Red Cityâs humming streets were distracting, but Laura was more so. If she had wanted a nice view that badly, we could have just flown in the Stardust for a minute. That would have given her a good view of the city. Nah, I wouldnât suggest that. She would tell me off for âtrying to ruin everything.
