Waking up, I feel groggier than I ever have, my whole body uncomfortably hot and numb. My mouth is dry, and my eyes are sore as I slowly awaken, the glaring lights above me only tempting me to go back to sleep. It’s only when I vaguely notice Oscar sitting beside me that I force myself to stay awake.

He tenderly holds my bandaged hand in his, his head bowed against the bed beside me as he takes deep breaths. Blearily glancing around the room, I shift in my spot and blurt out a cough, which is what catches Oscar’s attention. He lifts his head up, slightly disoriented and turns to face me, his eyes red and puffy from crying. The colour immediately returns to his face, and he smiles when he sees I’m awake.

“I was so worried,” He says meekly, unable to meet my gaze. “Your doctor told me you’ll be fine, but I was still pretty scared. He said that you’d be free to leave once you wake up but still… I just hate seeing you like this…” he takes a shaky breath. “What happened to you?”

I sigh, dreading however anticipating the question. I muster up the strength to push myself up and carefully rest my back against the backboard, licking my chapped lips as I blink back the sedative. “After you told me about Mom—” I immediately cut myself off. “Wait, how’s Mom? Is she okay?”

Oscar looks down, trying to hide the thick tears beginning to roll down his cheeks. He takes a deep breath and drops his head, shoulders trembling as sobs wrack his body. “She’s… she’s gone.”
