Chapter 23

They were all waiting when Andrew and Winston arrived: Mrs Jordan, Mrs Bargwana, and the three O’Donnell cats. Even Gus was propped awkwardly against the sunroom wall, but there was still no sign of Mr Lovell.

“Where is he?” Andrew scanned the faces of the adults.

Everyone turned to Mrs Bargwana. She flicked her long ponytail over her shoulder and cleared her throat. “He’s in Nostalgia, at the animal hospital. After Pat finished his story, Dorothy and I were on our way home when we came across another cat, a male black and white tuxedo. I sensed he had a connection to Pat, and I was right. It was his brother, pushed through time to re-forge their bond. And not a moment too soon! As I went to give Patrick the good news, I found him unconscious on the floor, and that hideous soldier doll was sitting on the windowsill in Pat’s kitchen.

“I didn’t know what to do, so I followed Dorothy’s lead when she saved my life all those years ago. I scooped him into my arms, and I asked to be taken to Nostalgia. At the last minute, Pat’s brother jumped into the embrace, and we all ended up in the foyer of the hospital.”

“I didn’t know you could do that, Lucy,” Mrs Jordan said.

“Neither did I, but desperate times call for desperate measures.”

“You’ll find the Seer played a hand in that transportation,” Deirdre spoke up. “As custodians, Lucy and I had little need to time step on our own, as the animals were always delivered to us. But we both developed a feel for requesting help when it was needed, and bless him, the Seer never let us down.”

“That’s all well and good,” Andrew said, “But is Mr Lovell still in hospital? It’s been a week since he finished his story. Mum was still alive when he, when he…” he trailed off, his fists clenching and unclenching by his side. “And is that awful doll still in his house?”

“I got rid of the doll,” Gus said.

“How can you be sure?” Andrew said. “It’s turned up that many times I swear it’s attached to a boomerang.”

“True,” Gus agreed. “But I know a thing or two about how to get rid of curses.”

“You do?” Andrew stared at him.

“That may be a good thing,” Mrs Bargwana interrupted. “Pat’s in the safest place for now, in the hospital in Nostalgia.”

“Is he okay?”

“The medical staff in Nostalgia appear to know what they’re doing, but I wondered if his sickness has something to do with the Hag’s curse on Patrick back in World War One.” Mrs Bargwana turned to Gus. “If that’s the case, we’ll need your help removing it, Angus.”

“Of course,” Gus answered. “I’m a little rusty, but you know I’d do anything for Pat.”

“Great. I’ll need you to visit him in hospital tomorrow,” she said.

“Will do,” Gus nodded. “I’ll be off then. I need to prepare a few things before I leave. Goodnight, everyone.”

“Goodbye, Angus,” Mrs Jordan said. “Now, Andrew.” She turned to him.
