Chapter 10
The drive to the estate was a long one, the area secluded. If there were neighbours Kayla couldnât tell. Although the house was big, she couldnât say it was a mansion. It was strange that Gabrielâs parents lived in a house this small. Not that it was small to Kayla, but by their standards, it seemed small, picturesque. Kayla held in a gasp. The view was just that awe-inspiring.
Beautiful coloured trees in various shades of blue, flowing in a straight line all the way on either side of the driveway. A magnificent water fountain, coated with crystal-like stone lining both in and out of the fountain, glittered in the sun. On the inside of the fountain a curvy, beautiful naked Croatian woman, painted in white, held a seductive pose with her arms extended in the air. Almost like she was in the middle of performing a seductive dance to entice whoever was coming up the driveway.
It was so incredible that Kayla wished she could bend over and touch the crystal to see if they were real or fake. Before she could do it, Gabriel was pulling her along to the front door, so caught up in the house's beauty she hadnât realized that they had exited the limo and was standing outside the beautiful house that continued the blue and white colour scheme.
She turned just in time to see Gabriel produce a key for the door and poof as if by magic they were entering the massive entryway. As Kayla entered the house, she felt the strangest kind of longing, and perhaps for the second time that she could remember she was instantly jealous that Gabriel got to grow up in such a beautiful house. If only she could afford something like this for her babies, give them somewhere special to grow up. A place where they could be happy and healthy, where she was not afraid of someone breaking into her house looking for drugs or guns. Kayla was so enthralled by the house and the turmoil eroding upon her mind that she missed Gabrielâs entire speech about the boxes which cluttered most of the living room space.
Gabriel, sensing something was off, turned to see the deer-in-headlights look on his fiancéâs face and realized she had not been paying attention to what he was saying. Instantly becoming annoyed, he tried to be reasonable. This was a lot for anyone, much less a five-and-a-half-month pregnant woman. Yes, he could be reasonable. If the roles were reversed, he would have been angry that a stranger had uprooted his life to suit his own needs. If this were Emily, what would he have done to make things better or easier?
Raking his hand over his entirely too short hair, wishing he hadnât succumbed to the need to have it cut, considering he loved to pull and tugged on the long strains, particularly when frustrated, like now. With a long groan his hands dropped to his sides. Gabriel thought the best approach was gentle, something Kayla clearly needed.
