CHAPTER SEVEN

I woke with the sun on the first day of my last year as a student at Messing Academy. I didn't have to and didn't want to either, but I couldn't get back to sleep no matter how hard I tried. Instead, I took an extra-long shower and my time getting dressed.

When I emerged from my room, Sam, Muriel, and Sadie were helping Mom and Dad expand the dining table. The breakfast they put on it was a sight to behold.

“I got carried away, having a real kitchen after living out of hotels all that time. And finally making you a first-day-of-school breakfast like I did for Sam and Zach when they were your age.”

“There’s no way we’ll finish all of this,” I protested.

“True. Not even with our help,” Sadie added.

“It’s fine if you don’t. Leftovers are a thing of beauty, after all.” Dad winked.

We sat and breakfasted. Sadie and I finished first. She asked if she could talk to me in my room. I agreed, and we went.

“This isn’t really my question,” she started.

“Okay. Go on.”

“It’s your anchor. With Feles.”

“Mateo wanted you to check on it?”

“Yes. If you don’t mind.”

“Not at all. I’ll have to thank Mat later because I haven’t checked it all summer. Probably should have before now, but there’s no time like the present.”

I leaned against the side of my dresser and pulled open the top drawer. All three of my anchors sat inside a tray in the left corner. I showed them to Sadie. She tapped one finger against her cheek.

“That gold one is Arie’s and the red one’s Sangra’s. So the black one must be Feles’.”

“Yeah. Good eye.”

Sadie held her hand over it, then looked up. I nodded. She lowered her hand and made a face as though touching something slimy. The expression fled a moment later. She lifted it from the box and held it flat on her palm.

“How bad is it?” I asked.

“No heavier than a house key. See for yourself.”

I held my hand out. She grinned, pinching it between her thumb and forefinger before passing it over. I blinked.

“Wow.”

Muriel called from the other room. “Sadie, it’s time to leave!”

“You’re going in the car?” I asked.

“Uh-huh! Last year of first day tradition for Mom and me.”

“Then we can take a way to school together some other day.”

“Right.”

I put the anchor back with the others and shut the drawer. “See you at school, Sadie.”

“See you!”

She headed out of the room. I had a few more minutes but didn’t feel like waiting around. My bag was ready, and I was dressed, so I went to say goodbye to my parents. After that, I returned to my room, calling Arie and Sangra in. Feles opened his eyes and shook off his cat nap before leaping to my shoulder. Finally, I deactivated my bracelet and used my mark.

Once through the way, Mateo was waiting. Jeff was halfway down the hall, arm-in-arm with Faye. I sighed but followed at a respectful distance. It wasn’t easy, missing the days when we all walked together, brief though they were.
