The next day, Toby cleared the time with Doc to recharge the Prime, but first, he needed the crystals, so he chose the furthest first: the one stored in the Messenger’s room atop the tower at the Keeper’s school.

He closed his eyes and looked ahead

Everything was wrong.

He shifted in. Someone stole all the books, but he’d already moved the most valuable ones to the most secure location: that little compartment Madame Strunk showed him when it was her apartment.

He walked into the pentagonal room. The safe was open. Some papers were there, but the thief took the recharging crystals.

Troopers guard the ground entrance, and the spiral stairs have a series of lethal traps. Either the thief knew how to defeat the traps (not likely without the clues), they knew how to turn off the traps (known only by the Messenger and the Head Mistress), or the thief had been in that room at least once, which meant three suspects: Toby, Doc (with no shifter), and the Emissary of Lisanair.
