Chapter 8

THE ARRIVAL IN LUDORUM’S capital came as a relief to all. The journey had seemed long even though it was remarkably shorter than they had first imagined. But the length of it, and the tiresomeness of it, were all due to the lack of breaks. They would stop for a short period of time, rest and gather their wits, and then trot as fast as the horses would allow for a good while before slowing to a more languid pace until it was a suitable time and place to stop for another rest. Now, in Ludorum and in the presence of the palace, they all forgot the plight it took them to get there.

The palace was nothing short of massive. It had four tall, intimidating towers to loom over the courtyard they dismounted their horses and carriages in, watched by many eyes as guards paced atop them. At the entrance, the front doors were ajar. There was no concern about security. Four guards were posted at either side of the doors with two, more casually dressed, men standing in front of it. They seemed to ignore her arrival, speaking between them while half turning to her, telling her that they were very aware that she was standing there but not so concerned that they would end their discussion for her. She put her frustration at being ignored aside for just long enough to take in their appearances. They were identical, mirror images of each other. They both had dark, curly brown hair that was just long enough to touch the high collars of their jackets. With small foreheads, deep-set eyes and straight brows and thin lips, they were both handsome and odd. But they weren’t quite full reflections of one another. One of the men, slightly taller than the other, kept his hands clasped behind his back, appearing open to the conversation while not as interested as his brother, a man who spoke with a wide smile on his face and gesticulating with an open hand.

Sybelle shared a glance with Ewin. He was just as confused by their so very blatant awareness of their presence and their insistence in ignoring them for a little while longer. His mouth fell open as he watched them. Sybelle shook her head, realising that if he wasn’t going to say anything then she was going to have to. She cleared her throat, gaining a flicker of a glance from the both of them.

The man on the left, the one with the bright smile, seemed most amused, and most enthusiastic to see her. He hurried down the steps, approaching her with a cheerfulness that had all her men around her wary and on guard, inching towards her. “Your Majesty,” he greeted, placing a hand to his heart and bowing his head. He looked up at her. His soft, gentle gaze was a thrill to see from behind a thin veil where his hair had fallen in front of his face.

“Your Majesty,” the other greeted, making his way down the steps in a manner more dignified than that of his brother.
