CHAPTER
EIGHT
Over the course of the next week, Marty and I got into a routine with studying. We started going to the library instead of studying at either of our fraternity houses, because the Kappas were still partying like there was no tomorrow. Colt and Jeff took to turning up at the library as well, pulling juvenile shit like bumping our table as they walked past and knocking Martyâs books to the floor, but to his credit Marty didnât retaliate, and after a week or so they must have gotten bored because they stopped showing up.
Marty had agreed to work every Wednesday afternoon for his grandpaâs friend Cal Fisher in town. He said his first day was pretty boring, but he liked Calâs dog. And, slowly, the campus seemed to be coming around to the idea that me and Marty were actually dating.
Very slowly.
âI donât get it, man,â Stuart said on Thursday morning when we were jostling for space to brush our teeth in the bathroom. âYou never seemed to be into the dudebro type, you know?â
âHeâs not a dudebro.â I unzipped my bathroom bag and wondered when Marty had slipped his little Lego astronaut in there. And why. It made me smile though, so maybe that was the reason. âAnd I wasnât into any type, since I was in a long-distance relationship up until recently.â
âYouâve still got eyes though.â
âI like Marty,â I said. âThat makes him my type.â
Stuart shot me a look in the mirror. âI mean, Iâd say Iâm happy for you, because I like Marty tooânot like thatâbut heâs⦠heâs irresponsible, Dalton.â
âHeâs trying,â I said. âHeâs toeing the line like you asked him. What more do you want?â
âMaybe Marty on a lower setting?â he said. âLike I said, I like him. But he bounces round like a pinball. That boy needs gutter guards.â
âThatâs ten-pin bowling,â I said absently. His comment made me think of what Martyâs grandpa had said. Distractible, heâd called him.
Stuart let out a slow breath. âDonât take this the wrong way, but I just donât see it. Like, you and Emmett? You guys fit. You and Marty?â He winced.
I clenched the Lego astronaut tight enough that it hurt my hand. âEmmett cheated on me, Stuart. And he dumped me in front of everyone.â
âI know. Fuck, Iâm sorry. That came out all wrong.â
I bit back my anger and tossed the astronaut back toward my bag. It wasnât Stuartâs fault that Emmett had turned out to be a cheating bag of dicks. Still, I didnât like the way he was implying Marty and I didnât go together. âMartyâs different, yeah. You know what else he is? Heâs fun. And maybe I want someone fun in my life.â
There was an edge to my tone, and Stuart took the hint and didnât mention Marty again. When he was done brushing, though, he said, âSo, um. Emmett called me. He wants to talk to you. He said heâs been texting and calling, but you arenât answering.â
And fuck my traitorous heart
