CHAPTER

EIGHT

Over the course of the next week, Marty and I got into a routine with studying. We started going to the library instead of studying at either of our fraternity houses, because the Kappas were still partying like there was no tomorrow. Colt and Jeff took to turning up at the library as well, pulling juvenile shit like bumping our table as they walked past and knocking Marty’s books to the floor, but to his credit Marty didn’t retaliate, and after a week or so they must have gotten bored because they stopped showing up.

Marty had agreed to work every Wednesday afternoon for his grandpa’s friend Cal Fisher in town. He said his first day was pretty boring, but he liked Cal’s dog. And, slowly, the campus seemed to be coming around to the idea that me and Marty were actually dating.

Very slowly.

“I don’t get it, man,” Stuart said on Thursday morning when we were jostling for space to brush our teeth in the bathroom. “You never seemed to be into the dudebro type, you know?”

“He’s not a dudebro.” I unzipped my bathroom bag and wondered when Marty had slipped his little Lego astronaut in there. And why. It made me smile though, so maybe that was the reason. “And I wasn’t into any type, since I was in a long-distance relationship up until recently.”

“You’ve still got eyes though.”

“I like Marty,” I said. “That makes him my type.”

Stuart shot me a look in the mirror. “I mean, I’d say I’m happy for you, because I like Marty too—not like that—but he’s… he’s irresponsible, Dalton.”

“He’s trying,” I said. “He’s toeing the line like you asked him. What more do you want?”

“Maybe Marty on a lower setting?” he said. “Like I said, I like him. But he bounces round like a pinball. That boy needs gutter guards.”

“That’s ten-pin bowling,” I said absently. His comment made me think of what Marty’s grandpa had said. Distractible, he’d called him.

Stuart let out a slow breath. “Don’t take this the wrong way, but I just don’t see it. Like, you and Emmett? You guys fit. You and Marty?” He winced.

I clenched the Lego astronaut tight enough that it hurt my hand. “Emmett cheated on me, Stuart. And he dumped me in front of everyone.”

“I know. Fuck, I’m sorry. That came out all wrong.”

I bit back my anger and tossed the astronaut back toward my bag. It wasn’t Stuart’s fault that Emmett had turned out to be a cheating bag of dicks. Still, I didn’t like the way he was implying Marty and I didn’t go together. “Marty’s different, yeah. You know what else he is? He’s fun. And maybe I want someone fun in my life.”

There was an edge to my tone, and Stuart took the hint and didn’t mention Marty again. When he was done brushing, though, he said, “So, um. Emmett called me. He wants to talk to you. He said he’s been texting and calling, but you aren’t answering.”

And fuck my traitorous heart
