“What the hell was I thinking?!” Devin demanded.

I remained silent, watching him, mildly alarmed, as he paced frantically.

He kept reaching for his hair, pulling the short strands on top, looking like he was on the verge of a breakdown.

I wasn’t sure why, so I simply watched, wondering when it would be time to intervene. When he suddenly swung at a tree, I made my move, catching his fist firmly in my hand.

He yanked out of my grip and backed away. It took everything in me to not follow and physically force him to stop.

Facing me, breathing heavily, he looked up at me and finally seemed to come back to normal a little bit.

“Fuck,” he groaned, rubbing his hands roughly over his face. “Okay. I’m okay.”

He didn’t seem to be. In fact, I was worried he might try to hurt himself once more. I watched his every movement carefully, ready just in case he tried to hit something again.

He didn’t though; instead, he shut his eyes and took a long, deep breath before looking at me.

“Tell me again how this happened?” he asked. “We didn’t have sex, right? Not penetrative. There was no ceremony, we just fooled around, same as last night. Not to mention we weren’t on the damn mountain. You said it had to be done on top of that mountain.”

I frowned, finally starting to follow.

“You kissed me,” I reminded him, a little baffled. “In fact, many times. Surely you remember that.”

“Yes, but—oh. Okay. We didn’t kiss last night. That makes sense. Kind of.”

He squinted up at me.

“Tell me again about the bonding ceremony.”

We hadn’t discussed it at all; he had simply jumped up, used my clothes to wipe himself off, and then pulled his back on, spewing human curses the whole while.

“I am sorry we did not have a proper bonding ceremony,” I said with full sincerity. “I would have loved to take you to the top of Mount Ethos to kiss you there, but we did it here and I am glad.”

I stepped forward, taking his hands in mine before he could pull away.

“I don’t regret this,” I told him. “And you shouldn’t either. We wanted this from the start. Yes, we hesitated in the middle, but I think it is obvious now how well we fit together. Devin, there is a reason you were escaping the human ship at the exact moment that I arrived. We are meant to be.”

He stared up at me for a long moment, then swallowed and looked away while my heart clenched, waiting for his response.

Finally, he nodded, and I sank with relief.

“You’re right,” he said softly. “This was the original plan, we just got off the rails for a bit. I’d accepted going back, facing whatever was to come on my own. I guess we’re back to the idea of doing it together.”

He squeezed my hands, a playful smile suddenly tugging his lips up, and my heart soared.

“But seriously, a kiss is all it takes to bond with someone?” He laughed.
