CHAPTER SEVEN
Entering her apartment, Sam kicked off her heels and tossed her purse down in the small hallway. Even though she really didn’t have to walk much during her commute ( the commuter rail was only a half mile away from where she lived) her feet were killing her. It was probably from all the running back and forth to Lance’s office.
“Mike?” she yelled, unsure if he was home or not. His shift didn’t start until 7 and it was 6:30.
“Living room!” he yelled back. Sam rolled her eyes, knowing by his tone he had laid around all day and the place was probably a mess. She let out a heavy sigh.
Mike and Sam had been dating for almost two years, and they had moved in together a year ago. They had met at a Red Sox game, hitting it off immediately. He didn’t seem to care that she was a big girl, in fact he always told her that he loved her curves. He had just graduated from college, his major in finance. After graduation the plan had been for him to get a job at one of the many firms in the Financial District in Boston, but that had been de-railed by him obtaining a job as a bartender at one of the trendy bars in downtown Boston instead. It was supposed to have just been for a summer, now it was going on two years. While the money was good, there weren’t any benefits, and it wasn’t a career. There was also the fact that he got home after 3am on the nights he worked. Sam was getting tired of it.
“Guess what happened to me today?” she asked him, plunking down in one of the oversized chairs she had splurged on when they had moved in.
“I dunno. What?” he asked, eyes glued to the TV while he lay across the sofa.
“They moved me from the reception desk to the CEO’s office. I work as his admin now.”
“Oh. That’s good isn’t it?” Mike replied, his eyes still glued to the TV.
Sam sighed. No, it wasn’t good. Unlike you, I have goals, she wanted to say. There was a 5 year age difference between them, but lately it felt more like 15 years. She really wanted a man, someone who worked hard and had goals. Instead she felt like she was with a frat boy.
“Yeah.” She mumbled, not wanting to bother to explain why it wasn’t good, and headed to the bedroom. She had a long day tomorrow, she looked forward to getting to bed early and reading a book, after taking a nice long bath.
