“Tomorrow we run through those drills again,” Gibson said, wiping his mouth with his napkin. “I have to teach you how to pick up heavy objects. There are some tricks about weight-shifting that’ll help you. There’s no reason you shouldn’t be able to pick up a hundred and seventy-five pound adult and sprint with him on your back.”

He put his empty plate on the tray in front of him.

She took the tray into the kitchen, emptied the dishes into the sink and ran water over them, figuring she’d wash them tomorrow.

In the meantime, she had an eight-hour shift at Boris’s. When she went back to the house to get her uniform, she’d check up on Grandma Nona.

She wondered if she could persuade her grandma that Stan’s pizza would be good for dinner.

She glanced at her watch. Running late. It seemed no matter how quickly she moved, she never caught up.

She brought Gibson a piece of apple tart, adding a dollop of the vanilla ice cream she found at the back of his freezer.

“Then we’ll concentrate on increasing your agility with the hose,” Gibson continued. “Oh, that tart looks wonderful. Thank you.”

“In case you want a midnight snack, I’ve put an extra piece out on the kitchen counter with a tea towel over it,” Mimi said. “Will you be able to get it?”

“For this apple tart, I’d crawl,” Gibson said cheerfully. “You’re going to work?”

“Yes, and I don’t get off until midnight and I don’t think I’ll have time to stop back in to check on you. Sure you’ll be all right until tomorrow morning?”

“I’ll be fine,” he said, digging into his first bite. “We’ll start in the morning.”

She picked up her purse and reached for the front doorknob.

“Oh, Mimi, one last thing.”

“Yes, Gibson?”

He placed his plate—already nearly empty; it was amazing how much a man could eat in such a short amount of time—back on the coffee table.

He wiped his mouth again.

He leaned back and tilted his head just enough to look as if he were pondering an important mystery of the universe.

“Wouldn’t you agree, Mimi, that Mrs. McGillicudy makes an unbeatable chicken marsala and a really first-rate apple tart?”
