CHAPTER

MAXTON

Maybe no one will ever mistake me for a genius but I’m not an idiot either.

Ambrose is talking about me. About the deal that saved my life when I was standing on death’s doorstep, posed to knock. I’d be dead without Beau. If Ambrose’s words, tone, expression and body language are anything to go by, he’d prefer it that way.

Part of me wants to step in front of Beau and shield him from Ambrose’s disapproval but Beau is standing rigid beside me, eyes on the… I assume Ambrose is a demon.

Aside from his odd eye color and the sharp fangs I caught a flash of when he approached, he looks like a very attractive human—like Beau with his glamor. Maybe he’s a vampire. It would explain why he pulled me close and sniffed me like a dog might a medium rare steak.

As far as I know, vampires have no interest in souls and Ambrose mentioned mine being more than enough to make up for the mistake Beau made ten years ago. If only he knew…

I lay a hand of silent support on Beau’s spine. He doesn’t pull away but doesn’t acknowledge me either as he glares at his… friend. If Ambrose can really be called a friend.

Ambrose is the first to break the stalemate. His shoulders slump and he sighs. “I’m sorry. I just don’t understand. This… attachment you have to humanity—” His gaze cuts to me, a little colder than it was when we were introduced, before returning to Beau. “It only hurts you in the long run.”

I can’t argue with Ambrose’s assessment, not when I saw the pain in Beau’s expression earlier today. Having to leave one place for another every few decades… His life really has been a series of goodbyes.

Is there a string of dead lovers standing behind him? Am I doomed to join their ranks, be nothing more than a specter haunting him across all of time? The last thing I want to be for Beau is another unavoidable heartbreak. How can I be anything else when he has forever and I only have another fifty years—maybe seventy if I get really lucky?

“It was nice to meet you, Ambrose,” I lie—nothing about meeting him has been nice, not the way he spoke to Beau, or the way he glares at me as I wrap my arm around Beau’s waist, pull him against my side and look down. “But it’s late. Should we head home?”

Beau exhales and nods. “Stay out of trouble, Rose.”

Ambrose huffs and shoves his hands into his pockets, rocking back on his heels. “Same. Not that you’ll listen.” He shakes his head. “You never do. Just… take care of yourself.”

I draw Beau away with a polite smile. As we round the corner there’s a sharp tug under my ribcage. Traveling with Beau is easier now; he doesn’t have to cling to keep me upright. Everything is dark and topsy-turvy for a long second before my feet land on solid ground.

It was dark when
