Chapter Twelve

After getting some of Misty’s things from her apartment and paying for her to stay at a hotel for a week, Jamie forced himself to think of nothing but hockey. He was careful not to come and go from his apartment alone, trying to match his schedule to his roommate’s without being obvious, and making sure he wasn’t home very often on his days off. He was already searching for a new place in a building with tighter security, and his roommate seemed amenable to moving after Jamie had told him about the crazy neighbors that blackmailed young mothers. His plan would be to try to make a move during the All-Star break at the end of January, but it wasn’t that far away so he was scrambling to find a place that his roommate liked, as well as a moving company that could do it while he and his roommate were away for a few days so they didn’t have to deal with Collin.

His throat felt tight, his stomach lurched and it seemed relief would only come from being in his arms.

Jamie’s ears burned at the thought and he wondered, after all this time and confusion, if he would ever be comfortable with this new development in his life. How had he gone more than 27 years without ever being attracted to a man and then fell in love with one as if it happened every day? No matter how much he tried to come to terms with this, he always went back to the idea that he couldn’t actually have a relationship with a man. He’d hoped that would change once they were apart, but although he yearned for Viggo, he still couldn’t fathom them living together, or having a family. He knew lots of gay men did it, but for him, it felt so far from the norm he knew it wasn’t going to be something he could easily live with. Which meant ending things. They were already emotionally invested, but it had only been a few months. If he waited any longer, the pain and heartbreak would be much worse, so
