Chapter 5

Ridge

T he Lord is testing me.

With my shirt firmly sticking to every curve of Clementine's body, I feel an uncomfortable reaction below the belt. And with Hadley standing just a few feet away, wrapped up in a towel and looking as adorable as ever, I force myself to avert my eyes.

"Hey, uh, would you like to stay for dinner?" I ask as I look at my daughter. Can't think any bad things looking at a three year old. "I mean, we're having dinosaur chicken nuggets, some peas and carrots, and a brownie for dessert. If you're interested in our culinary delights, Hadley and I would love to have you."

Hadley bobs her head up and down while staring at Clementine with big green eyes. "Daddy and I made brownies last night."

"Hadley poured the pre-measured ingredients. Without her assistance, I don't know if I would have finished before bedtime."

The smile on Clementine's face lights up the entire backyard. "I would love to try Hadley's brownies. It'll give me a chance to dry my things?" She asks, looking at me expectantly.

"Of course. We wouldn't want Clementine to get sick from going outside in wet clothes." I look at Hadley while I'm talking to direct my words at her, but she seems enamored with Clementine, too. "Let's go inside and get changed, everybody."

I walk Hadley to her room to get her changed. The wet bathing suit is a pain in the ass to take off and she giggles as we pick out a new outfit for her. She arrives at dinner wearing shorts with bananas on them and a pink shirt. It isn't the most stylish look, but Hadley picked it herself.

Clementine arrives a moment later wearing my clothes and I nearly choke on my spit. "Sorry," she apologizes. "I hope it's okay that I borrowed

a few things."

She swims in my large t-shirt. It brushes against her thighs, almost covering the boxers she has on beneath. It's more than okay that she borrowed my things. I would give them to her forever if she promised to wear them every time she was around me. "No, no at all." I clear my throat and get to work pulling chicken nuggets out of the freezer to go in the oven.

"By the way, I was able to take the next three days off. My boss was pretty understanding and told me that if I need anything, let her know. She was happy to hear I'd already found a babysitter." Hadley and Clementine sit at the kitchen island staring at me.

"You showed up at the right house at the right time," Clementine grins.

"And you asked the right unemployed person to help you."

I frown as I pour nuggets onto the sheet pan, carefully spreading them out into a single layer. "I don't think I remember asking for help."

Clementine snorts and rolls her eyes at me. "Yeah, you just looked all pathetic and in over your head until I offered my services. Same thing."

I don't get a chance to say anything else before Hadley starts talking; she must have been feeling left out.
