Hell City
Chapter One
When I first met Linda Stark, I didnât ask why she had a bird on her head. Donât get me wrong. I was curious about it. Even I admit it was the first question that came to mind. Then again, Iâm a man of the world. I seen some strange things in my time.
Maybe it just goes back to the way I was raised, see. My sainted mother would have thought the question rude, would have called it indelicate at the very least. Something that just wasnât done in polite company.
Problem was, the situation I found myself in â the one where I meet a woman with a bird on her head â conflicted with something else my mother taught me, something that has always served me well over the years. She said to always get other people talking about themselves. She said it was their favorite subject. She guaranteed it.
And even my sainted mother would have to admit the bird woulda made a great talking point, donât you think? A kind of icebreaker, if you will.
Another reason I didnât ask about the bird was I thought that maybe there was something new going on, some kind of pop culture thing I might have missed, one where people went around with birds on their heads. I didnât want to seem unhip.
But the real reason I didnât ask about the bird was I thought it might be some kind of test. Iâm a peeper, see? A shamus. A private dick. And Iâm supposed to be able to see right through stuff like that. So at the time, I thought that maybe she figured I was gonna be able to sort it all out on my own. I also thought that maybe if I didnât, she wouldnât hire me.
I should also confess right now that a whole lotta stuff has happened between then and now that might kind of cloud my memory of things. But quite honestly â between you and me? â the time just never seemed right to ask the question. The bird question, that is.
Of course looking back on it, if I had to give you one guess, I think she had the bird on her head for the simple reason she was crazy. Loopy. And most probably, certifiably insane. But that never stopped me from taking someoneâs money.
It was the old man first turned me on to the case. He called me to his office for a confab, happened to let it drop he knew a dame in trouble. The old man knew I was a sucker for a dame in trouble.
From across his desk, he slipped a scrap of paper my way. Said it was all arranged. I tucked the note in the pocket of my fogger and didnât ask any questions.
