On the way to school I saw litter in the streets, petrol fumes in the air, babies crying in buggies. I felt as if all that was my fault. I needed to make things change.

Benedict met me at the school gates. “I tell you what I found on YouTube,” he said. “A film of a snake swallowing an antelope. Why don’t they put stuff like that on the news and not stories about murders and wars? Why don’t you pass a law about that?”

“Benedict,” I said, “shut up. And carry my bag. It’s too heavy and I can’t think.”

Benedict looked hard at me. “You’ve changed, Ted McKillop.”

“Of course I’ve changed,” I said. “I’m trying to save the planet.”

At lunchtime I sent Benedict to get me some hot food while I went and sat on an empty table so I could do some thinking.

From time to time I looked up at all the other kids. They were laughing and shoving each other and eating. So chilled. That’s because they’re not geniuses. They don’t have to save the world.
