Chapter Thirteen - Robert

I had absolutely no idea what just happened.

One minute, I was loaded down with bags of takeout from three different places, Mexican, Chinese, and Indian, because I realized I had no idea what kind of food Lily liked to eat, and then the next moment anger was written all over her face, and she nearly strangled me right there in the middle of the lobby.

I was at a complete loss.

The moment she ran out the door, I turned and watched her petite form as she retreated, fully aware that every pair of eyes in the place was fixated on us.

Rich people loved their drama.

“What are you staring at?” I snarled at them, and every head quickly snapped back to whatever boring business they’d been obsessed with before.

I took a breath and watched Lily disappear into the crowded sidewalk, and then I tried to walk to the elevator with as much dignity as I could call up, despite the fact that the entire lobby had just seen me embroiled in a lover’s quarrel.

“You know what you did,” she’d hissed at me, right before she tore herself from my grip and left me without any further explanation.

But I had absolutely no idea what I’d done.

This morning was amazing. Sex with Lily was so much more than I could have ever imagined it to be, and she’d seemed genuinely happy.

And I was surprised at how much I liked to see her genuinely happy.

Then I’d decided to go out and get us some lunch while she slept, and I came back to an entirely different person.

The worst part was, I had no idea why.

I went back into my now empty apartment, still heavy with the scent of sex and sweat, and tossed the food onto the kitchen island. I’d completely lost my appetite. Then I wandered aimlessly through the apartment, and when I came upon my office, I knew exactly why Lily was so upset.

I’d been an idiot and forgotten to lock the damn door in my haste to get a condom and get back to sex, and Lily had gone in there.

She’d definitely done some damage.

The place looked like an absolute war zone. I felt like I’d stepped into one of those awful war documentaries where the director ordered the camera to show the audience what it’s like inside a house that’s been decimated by bombs and terror.

Except no bomb went off in my office. Unless that bomb answered to Lily Monroe.

Every scrap of paper had been torn off my cork board and ripped to shreds, and the papers I’d left on my desk were now tiny pieces of white on the floor. They looked like snow against the dark wood, or ash from the burning of my entire future.

Lily had seen.

That was why she was so upset. That was the reason for the entire storm out and the scene in the lobby of my building. I’d idiotically forgotten to lock the door to my office, and the sly little devil had come in and seen everything I’d stolen from her.
