I lay in bed staring at the ceiling, my mind replaying the day in still images. Her hair against my pillow this morning. The walk in the woods in the sunshine. The floor of her room with her body against mine. Her bed. Her face while she explained her mother. Feeding her. Dancing with her.

Ella was an emotional rollercoaster and I should have been exhausted but I was wired. The wine was meant to relax me, but my heart beat wildly in my chest, conflicted between the physical desire and the emotional tangle.

She responded to me. Watching her eat, I almost threw her on the table and had her there in the kitchen. She was driving me insane licking the food off the fork. It was one of the most seductive things I had witnessed, and she was so unaware. Talking about something as serious as her battle with food explained why she was so thin. But it didn’t explain all about her. I hoped she kept it all in her tonight.

She held me off. Hearing her talk about her mother and her bulimia revealed some of her story, but I knew there was something deeper. She was feisty this morning in the woods about the word nothing, then in her room her thoughts were holding her back. She kept doing it while we danced and just when I thought I had her relaxed, I mentioned my mum and ruined it all.

What was all, though? I didn’t know what would happen tomorrow. It gave new meaning to the saying ‘one day at a time.’ Jacob would be home. Would Ella and I go back to how we were before? Her fighting me? I doubted it. We could hardly be in the living room without each taking turns peeking at the window, silently recalling what had transpired the night before against the glass. How could we ignore that even with Jacob home? I felt like a silly teenager, but I was an adult. An adult who worked in someone’s home, had a certain someone’s niece up against the window, and wanted her in my bed.

As if sensing my thoughts, a light knock came at my door, and I sat up as Ella walked in.

“Can I come it?”

“There’s no lightning tonight, Ella,” I bit, not knowing why my words sounded so rough.

She froze with one hand on the door knob, the other wrapped around the edge of the door. Tonight, she had on a long t-shirt that looked like a dress. Her bare legs peeked out from under it, revealing creamy skin. Her hair was piled in a messy knot at the back of her neck. I ran a hand across my face and sighed loudly.

“Come here, Princess.”

She seemed hesitant, but closed the door behind her and walked to the edge of my bed. The blanket had fallen down to my waist and I didn’t have a t-shirt on tonight. I was warm with the energy inside me that I needed to release.
