Chapter Thirty Two

When Monday morning came around, Gregor was awake as his alarm clock sounded. He knocked it off and sank back into the warm pillow. He couldn’t face work today. He couldn’t face anything.

Telling the others that Miss Givens was gone had drained him. It was awful. Never before had he seen Sydnee lose control. She became distraught, crying, make-up sliding down her face, asking questions he couldn’t answer. Arran was just the opposite, shut down, saying nothing, asking nothing. Alex just held Arran’s hand. Gregor left them to look after each other. He had one more person to tell.

Gregor returned to Boy Lane, went into the living room and switched on a single lamp that had somehow survived the ransacking of the house. He opened up the drinks cupboard and pulled out a bottle of brandy. It was unopened. Miss Givens had restocked the drinks cupboard and never even had the chance to sample one. He broke the seal, poured himself a large glass and went and sat in Miss Givens’s armchair. He offered up a toast to his fallen landlady. She had done so much for so many young gay men. Men in trouble, like him, Andy and Jez. It wasn’t right that her life had been ended by things as trivial as loose carpet and worn slippers. She deserved more than that. Since she hadn’t expected to die, had she even made a will? What would happen to Boy Lane if she hadn’t? It would likely pass to the government or her estranged family. They would sell it and bank the proceeds. Miss Givens would hate that.

Only yesterday, Gregor had felt on top of the world. When he’d left for a night out, he had a family, a home, a job and a new love interest. A few hours later and Miss Givens, the foundation of his world, had been taken. With her gone, the rest of his life was in danger of crumbling. He was at risk of losing his home. He and Andy might have to leave Boy Lane, maybe even Vauxhall. His family was in danger of fragmenting. Arran and Alex were already distant, and Sydnee had her business to run. Christmas and Halloween gatherings and nights out at the Sanctum would be a thing of the past, only revisited in old photographs. Miss Givens had been the one who held them together. But she wasn’t here any more. With Miss Givens gone, life as they’d known it was over and could never be rebuilt. None of their lives would ever be the same again.

In the early hours of the morning, Andy crept into the house. He was surprised to find Gregor still up. He asked if everything was all right. Gregor hadn’t rung him. It was unfair to give such devastating news over the phone when the guy was stuck at work. Gregor told him now - Miss Givens had passed away. Andy spent all of Sunday in his room, upset and shocked at Miss Givens’s passing.
