CHAPTER SIX

AWARE Nick had withdrawn into some place deep inside himself, Annabelle got behind the wheel of the troopie. She could drive slowly and watch for animals herself, leaving her companion to sort out whatever was bothering him without unnecessary conversation.

She sensed distress of some kind and, knowing pain herself, felt sorry for the man who, manlike, would probably not go blurting it out to a virtual stranger. Yet talking about Graham, even revealing only the bare bones of her one and only romantic entanglement, had somehow eased her pain, and maybe talking would help Nick.

Not that she’d ask. Not in a thousand years…

She slowed at the top of the jump-up, delighting in the view of the thin strip of gravel road stretching dead straight in front of them until it disappeared into the distance, flat, empty land either side of it, silver in the moonlight.

‘It upset you, the baby being born so premmie?’

So much for a thousand years—it hadn’t even been a thousand seconds!

She’d stopped the troopie as she’d asked the probably impertinent question and now she turned towards Nick, who was staring into the night.

‘No!’

Okay, so you don’t want to talk, Annabelle thought, and shifted into first gear, ready to take off again, but Nick’s hand closed over hers.

‘We’re off the road,’ he said quietly. ‘Let’s sit here for a while. It’s very beautiful.’

It was very beautiful, but Annabelle was distracted from appreciating it by the fact that Nick had left his hand over hers on the gear lever. Of course, he’d probably forgotten it was there and it certainly meant nothing, but her body, which had at first started at the touch, was now, well, practically revelling in it.

How daft could one woman be? As if her experience with Graham hadn’t been enough to warn her off men, particularly men like Nick Tempest with his love-'em-and-leave-'em reputation.

It was because she was needy—craving affection—craving a real family now Kitty was talking of moving in with her boyfriend. Oh, Annabelle knew all the psychology of it, but it didn’t stop her body reacting to a man’s touch.

Or was it just this man’s touch?

She was so lost in her own mental musings that she missed the beginning of his conversation, catching up as he said, ‘No idea she was pregnant, let alone that she’d had an abortion. There was a problem with some adhesions and the O and G chap she saw for the curette spoke to me about it without realising she hadn’t told me about being pregnant in the first place, let alone what she’d done about it.’

The words were so bleakly matter-of-fact that the enormity of what he was saying took a moment to sink in.

‘She had an abortion without telling you? Your wife?

The model?’

Nick removed his hand from on top of the warm fingers on the gear lever and used it to rub the stubble on his chin.

‘You’re right, it was the model who had the abortion. Turned out she’d just received a fantastic offer from a top agency in New York and having a baby certainly didn’t fit her career plan.
