CHAPTER SIX

The idea of them slipping off to some isolated mountain hideaway to be alone did make sense. That was one of the things that scared Savannah.

I’m beginning to think like Dexter Caine, she told herself in despair, but she didn’t have time to wonder why that fact bothered her so much.

Dexter said, “Robinson will leave out the dress I want you to wear.”

“Oh, now you’ve taken to dictating everything I put on, too? What’s wrong with what I’ve chosen?” Savannah’s gesture took in her loosely-fitted periwinkle trousers and coordinating blouse. “You seemed to like these things yesterday.”

“Nothing’s wrong, but for this occasion I think we need something a little more dramatic.” He stepped past her and pushed the closet door open a little farther. “Yes, this will be just right.”

Savannah eyed the red dress which was the only thing still hanging in her closet and the matching wide-brimmed hat which perched on the shelf just above. “That’s the one thing you bought yesterday that I really hate, Dexter.”

“Oh? Why?”

Savannah made a face. Her distaste was hard to explain, for the fabric was beautiful, the cut was excellent, the fit superb. Even the color – not just red, but a sharp watermelon-red – had looked good on her, despite her initial hesitation about wearing anything in that shade. It was just that there was so very much red, and not even a contrasting accent to break it up.

“It’s so eye-catching,” she said.

“I know. That’s why I want you to wear it today.” Dexter picked up the hat and set it on her head. “With the veil just slightly over your eyes, like so.”

Savannah looked up at him through the red mist formed by the delicate net veil. “If this hat was green instead of red, I’d look like a walking tomato,” she muttered.

Dexter’s gaze skimmed her figure as if for the first time. “No, you wouldn’t.”

A warm and delicious sensation spiraled up from the pit of Savannah’s stomach.

Then he added calmly, “To the best of my knowledge, there’s never been a tomato that was shaped anything like you.”

She stuck her tongue out at him. He laughed and went on down the hall to his own room.

This time they left the hotel through the front entrance. Dexter had changed into a dark suit; the narrow stripe in his tie matched the shade of Savannah’s dress. It was a very subtle statement of togetherness, though Savannah thought it would probably be wasted on the tabloid types, who tended to think in broader terms. She didn’t bother to tell Dexter that, however.

The limousine which had brought her from the airport was waiting under the canopied front entrance, and the driver stood at attention beside the open passenger door. Savannah wondered how long he’d been standing there.

Dexter paused to greet him, dallying – Savannah was certain – for the benefit of the cameras pointed at them. She wondered how many of them belonged to tourists and how many were stakeouts from the tabloids.

She stood on her toes so she could whisper into Dexter’s ear.
