CHAPTER 4

Afterward she felt like a jellyfish on the beach. He hadn’t made her come two times, it had been more like three and a half. She wanted to tell him so, but her lips wouldn’t work, except to return the little kisses he occasionally pressed to them.

Remy. In his bed. And all it had taken was engaging his protective instincts. Maybe she should have invented a reason to run to him a long time ago. Instead of waiting for a man to be murdered…she sat up. “Remy!” she said urgently.

“What?” he sounded more relaxed than she’d ever heard him.

“Hintz! I can’t believe I left this part out. The man I saw shoot someone and dump their body was Barton Hintz!” To her ears the delivery sounded beyond melodramatic. It was like she was being cross examined by Matlock.

Remy sat up, sheet falling around his waist. “How is that possible?” he demanded, grabbing her by the shoulders.

She shook him off. “I’ll tell you, just let go of me, yeesh.” She sat legs crossed on the bed while he impatiently propped himself up against some pillows. She grabbed one pillow from under him and dragged it over her lap for modesty, wincing when the movement made her inner muscles protest.

“You shouldn’t be anywhere near Barton Hintz,” he told her. “It’s one of the reasons I let you move to Syracuse, to keep you out of his sights.”

She shook back her mane of hair, realizing she must look like Maria Antoinette before the guillotine. But that couldn’t be helped, and it was not like Remy hadn’t seen her on a hundred other bad hair days. “Let me?” She paused and bit her lip deciding to let the comment go. “Well, I got him in my sights,” she told him, before launching into the full story.

Remy held perfectly still and listened without interruption. “You have that bastard on film?” he asked at the end.

Sydney hung her head. “No, not doing the shooting. Just directing the chemical disposal. When he brought the gun out I was too busy calling the cops.” She shook her head. “But they didn’t get there in time. Hintz took off as soon as he was sure the guy was sunk.” Tears ran down her face. “They tied something to him to make him sink, Remy. There was nothing I could do.”

“Of course there wasn’t! My God, you shouldn’t even have been there.” He ran an agitated hand through his hair. “Why the fuck couldn’t you just let me set you up someplace safe?”

They had had a version of this argument many times over the years and she easily slipped into her role. “Because I have the right to make my own choices. I’m not even your real family. You don’t get to arrange my life.”

He was smirking at her, obviously satisfied that he was able to arrange her life to a certain extent.

To pop his bubble Sydney added, “You’re not my big brother.”

There. That melted the superior look from his face.
